Update 9/13/2009 I am leaving the review I wrote a long time ago, and no doubt updated. But I need and want to add, that Hapax was one of my first friends on SU, and is still one of my best friends. I wish him the best of luck in Cambridge, England, although he won't need it! His blog asks, 'How similar are you?' and then answers, "Two of a Kind". But that's not true. Because Hapax is unique. He is, without a doubt, "One of a Kind", an amazing man, talented poet, good friend, caring father, really funny guy, and one hell of a stumbler! T, I love you. Hapax's blog continues to be one of the very finest on SU! Visually and artistically it is beautiful, and I learn something every time I visit - which is often! And Hapax not only has talent, he is a person with great integrity and humor and courage. I'm lucky to know him! Thanks! A scholar called Hapax can write His blog glows with beauty and light Each entry a treat We're swept off our feet By Ireland's best son! Ah, delight! Visit the fantastic StumbleBlog of Hapax. His site is absolutely awesome! Check his site for the art, the poetry, the commentary - oh, just stop reading this and go LOOK! >^~^

hapax: where the deft curatorial meets complementary presentation and the result is greater than the sum of its parts - always illuminating - ever fascinating... * that's how I saw things almost a year ago.... then hapax went away for a bit - and the return of this spectacular stumbler also heralds a return of his wunderkammer of delights.... .....wheeeeeeee

http://hapax.stumbleupon.com/ I last reviewed Hapax about 8 months ago and somehow haven't chanced upon the blog again until today. I'm glad to say that nothing has changed...this is a wonderful stumbler that has such an interest in just about everything, every posting is written with such style and intelligence that I am in awe. I decided to leave my last review as it stood and just add my comments to say......bloody brilliant! Until I came across Hapax's posting about L. Frank Baum's book,'The Art of Decorating Dry Goods Windows', I had no inkling that the author responsible for 'The Wizard of Oz' was so instrumental in changing the appearance of the shop window! This interested me for several reasons, one was because it was one of those things-you-didn't-know-you-didn't-know and secondly because I was once a window dresser myself. I couldn't possibly better the interpretation of the book itself or the subject matter, so for that I'd recommend Hapax's excellent review. Shopping used to be a feast for the eyes with wonderful windows which were intended to entice and seduce the customer into parting with their money. Nowadays, stores all look the same in every high street up and down the country with bog-standard windows covered in posters offering year round 'Sales'. BORING!! It would be great if we could go back to the ideals that Baum espoused but big businesses, with a few exceptions, are not prepared to spend the time and effort in the creation of wonderful window displays when the staff to implement them can be gainfully employed on a cash desk with no knowledge of the products on sale. Hapax writes wonderfully about so many subjects that I heartily recommend that you take a cup of coffee and knock the phone off the hook and settle down for a damned good browse! pps. 28/3/09 On a sadder note, since I wrote the original review about shop windows being the bland nationwide brand that they had become, the recent recession has largely made my posting redundant because so many shops have just fallen by the wayside, forced out of business and shut up shop. A trip to town now consists of a walk past countless charity shops (much needed these days) and boarded up windows and the shops that are managing to hang in there offering never-ending 'SALES' of stuff they can't shift because nobody wanted it in the first place. I hope the current financial situation recovers sooner than the gloom merchants predict but somehow, I doubt it.
