Nemertea (ribbon worms) are characterized by a long, reversible proboscis held in a hollow proboscis sheath (rhynchocoel) above the digestive tract. The Phylum also has distinct circulatory systems and a tubular gut with anus. The nemertean proboscis normally is used for prey capture but in most terrestrial and some intertidal species it also is used as a very effective escape mechanism. Marine species are known to feed by shooting out the very long thin proboscis which is either sticky or has poisonous hooks. The prey is entangled in the proboscis and drawn towards the worm's mouth.


Well .... you can call this thing a "proboscis" if you want; I know what it reminds me of ...

On Monday, The Humane Society of the United States began running television ads exposing IHOP's continued use of eggs exclusively from hens confined in tiny, barren battery cages - where the birds are immobilized for their entire lives and cannot fully stretch their limbs.

IHOP's primary egg supplier, Michael Foods, was the subject of a recent undercover expose` that revealed shocking abuses, including hens forced to live in cages with decomposing corpses, sick and injured hens and severe food safety concerns. The footage mirrored a 2006 HSUS expose` of Michael Foods.
