"It's the norm, not the exception, for people to be preoccupied with their own suffering and supremely uninterested in hearing about the oppression others face. This lack of empathy is one of the biggest roadblocks we face in dismantling racism. If we're serious about social justice, we need to recognize that when one of us is discriminated against, it's an affront to us all."
A lovely platitude. How many people who are
not preoccupied with themselves take this to heart? This doesn't just apply to racism; throw in gender issues, social issues, and educational and economic differences and you have a whole slew of crap to discriminate against.
This is one reason some people have a 'problem' with Obama: they simply cannot put themselves in the other person's shoes. They do not understand the concept of empathy. According to President Obama, his mother expected him to swim in empathy until his fingers got wrinkled. I think he does a good job of this. A lot of people just don't "get it", however.
Regarding the original blog: if the "white woman" who is raising an adopted child from Africa is as racist as she is presented as being, I cringe for her adopted child. Unless, of course, the child is also "white". If that's the case then everything is peachy.
