A few days ago he was a comic sideshow in Afghanistan's presidential elections. Today Ramazan Bashardost emerged as the man who could stop President Karzai achieving a first-round victory in Thursday's election.

A maverick populist who has positioned himself as the anti-warlord, anti-corruption face of politics, Dr Bashardost's campaign was made famous by the decrepit Mr Bean-style car - Afghans adore the comic character - in which he toured the country.

However, despite almost no mainstream advertising or endorsements, his campaign has been gaining momentum. Crucially he appears to be drawing votes away from Mr Karzai, threatening to drag the incumbent beneath the overall 50 per cent majority he needs to avoid an unpredictable second round of voting. Dr Bashardost was, in the view of most analysts, the clear winner in an historic first presidential debate on Afghan television on Sunday night.



It will be interesting to see what effect - if any - he has in the outcome of these elections.

6. Join Love Our Children USA for the National Bullying Prevention Awareness Week, October 4-10, and wear a blue shirt to end bullying on Blue Shirt Day, October 5th. STOMP Out Bullying!

We have to take responsibility for what goes on in our schools, playgrounds and online. Bullying is unacceptable behavior with serious consequences. Pledge to stomp out bullying before more kids are affected.
