Immigration policy has been at the forefront of political debate in recent years - #ImmigrationPolicy - In 2013 alone we have seen such momentous events as the failure of President Obama’s DREAM (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors) Act to pass in Congress, and his subsequent decision to enact the bulk of his comprehensive proposal for reform through the use of executive order. As the bi-partisan group of Senators known as the “Gang of Eight” nears the completion of a new proposal intended to pass comprehensive immigration reform into law, a brief review of the history of immigration and citizenship laws in the United States seems as timely as ever.

To understand the current debate over immigration reform, we must first look to our past and place the debate within the context of an argument as old as America itself. The first law regarding immigration and citizenship was the Nationalization Act of 1790, which limited citizenship to “free white persons” of “good moral character,” with requirements for how long that person had lived in the U.S and how long the application process should take being the only variants on this initial law for the next several decades. This theme of racial, national prejudice in dictating immigration policy has been at the core of the debate ever since. In 1868, the 14th amendment was passed, and in 1898 the Supreme Court made a landmark ruling in U.S vs. Wong Kim Ark by interpreting this amendment to guarantee citizenship to all children born in the United States, regardless of parentage (with the exception of children of diplomats).
The 20th century saw a number of changes in immigration policy, as more and more people sought to emigrate to the U.S for greener pastures. Asian immigration, whether implicitly or explicitly, greatly limited (or in the case of China, entirely limited) the number of immigrants from this region. The assassination of President McKinley in 1901 by a child of immigrant parents offered an opportunity for “naturalists” to greatly limit foreign nationalization in the country, and restrictions on mental health and literacy were put into place. In the 1920’s, quota laws were put into place that limited the number of immigrants by nationality based on various census numbers, which became increasingly restrictive. This time period was marked by a domestic environment hostile to foreigners, for racial or economic reasons, and this sentiment continued to grow for the next three decades and drive policy. The Supreme Court actually ruled that certain nationalities, such as Indians, were “non-white”, thus retroactively revoking the citizenship of millions. By the Great Depression, economic conditions saw not only what was essentially a ban on immigration, but also the coercion of millions of previously nationalized citizens, particularly of Mexican descent, to repatriate to their home country.
Top 6 Ways You Can Make Your Kitchen Easier To Manage and Maintain - #ElevatedStorage, #GraniteCounterTops, #Kitchen - If you actually cook on a daily basis, the kitchen is probably one of the places in the house that you spend the most time in, and probably one of the places in the house that you cleaned the most. However, kitchens are also one of those mysteries of the universe as they seem to get dirty right after you clean them, no matter what you do. While upping the ante and devoting more time to cleaning is obviously a possible solution, why not inoculate your kitchen against dirt and mess by giving it a makeover? Here are some tips.
Granite counter tops and flooring
[caption id="attachment_3077" align="aligncenter" width="500"] granite counter tops - courtesy of flooranddesign.net[/caption]
Granite might possibly be the best thing you can ever put into your kitchen. The naturally-occurring stone is stain-proof, waterproof and scratch-proof, in addition to being resistant to heat and a whole load of other things notwithstanding zombie attacks. Granite makes your kitchen look good, and makes cleaning a breeze. It also doubles as a surface for rolling out pastry or dough, and for those who are into candy-making; granite's heat resistance makes it a great surface to drizzle all that sugar syrup.

Raise your shelves and cabinets a few inches off the ground, or attach them to the wall. This prevents dust, dirt and spills from pooling underneath the shelves, and allows you to clean underneath them regularly without having to resort to sophisticated cleaning apparatus. Kids' toys and small hamsters will also be less likely to be doomed to the fate of collecting millennia's worth of dust trapped under a kitchen cabinet.
5 Secrets To Furnish Your Place On Budget - #BudgetFurnish - I guess most of us wonder how to save money on just about anything for the home – from food and basic staples to area rugs, sofas and chairs. But let's not forget that we can't buy just anything that is on bargain... Not everything will fit in our grand design scheme. What's more furnishing a home requires a well-thought design plan, clear idea of want vs. need and lots of patience. And if you're a smart shopper you won't even need a big budget. Give these 5 ideas a chance and see how much you can save in a month or two...
Know The Online Product Price
[caption id="attachment_3073" align="aligncenter" width="450"] photo courtesy of fashion-hairstyle.info[/caption]
It's a trick that can save you a lot. Before you head to a store, check it's website for items which are on sale. It's not only faster this way to locate what you're looking for but it'll have other benefits as well. For example, a friend of mine bought a bed on sale even though it wasn't marked as such in the store. However, he checked the sale online and it was there, on the store's website. The employee on the counter honored the sale price! Here a smart phone comes in handy.
Search using Google Images to get more places that sell the product you want to buy. Thus you can compare different pricing levels and pick the one that suits you best. It'll even produce similar images and products in case you need an alternative to a favourite chair, carpet or table.
Get Regular Sale Notices
Patience is crucial in this game. You can easily find most of the things you want to buy at 20 or even 30% discount if you wait for a sale. Even though this can slow things down a lot, you will be able to outfit your place on a tight budget. For example, I had to wait for a new area rug for six months (I missed an opportunity around Christmas) but I snapped it on sale last week with a nice discount. Another thing to do is to use site like hukkster to get information about products you like when they go on sale.
Make A Thrift Shop Schedule
Thrift shops are a gold mine for vintage furniture and housewares and inevitably produce great deals. Find a couple of such shops and establish connection and trust with their owners by visiting and buying stuff regularly. Try to pop-in whenever you can. And even though you don't buy things every time be friendly and chatty. Always ask what's new in the store and when they get new merchandise. Thus you'll be ahead of the other smart shoppers in town and be able to snatch better products and bargains.
DIY Or Trade Skills
If you are handy with tools then you can be your own designer and manufacturer of custom-made furniture, bedding or whatever else you are good at. In case you lack a specific set of skills, look around you and see whether a friend of yours can do it. You can trade skills between each other. They can get a nice headboard for your bed while you set up their new Word-press site. On the other hand, you can always use your cooking talents to get a new book case, for example.

5 Important Factors to Consider When Specifying Garage Doors - #GarageDoors - There is a wide variety of garage doors available in the market, and there are many styles and designs to choose from. However, since garage doors are overlooked, many details escape the notice of developers and architects. The important points come to notice only after the installation is finished and the work is done. However, by then it is too late and as a result, many compromises have to be made. Following are a few factors which should be considered while specifying a garage door:
1. Size of the Door – This should be the first thing that the architect and the client decide upon. The size of the garage door is dependent on the vehicles that would be kept in the garage. The width of the door and its depth should allow the vehicle to pass easily without any problems. Most people look into the style and material of the garage door but forget this one very important point. The vehicle should be studied before the garage door’s size is decided.
[caption id="attachment_3068" align="aligncenter" width="300"] garage doors photo courtesy of a2zgaragedoorca.com[/caption]
2. Use Of The Garage – Not all people who have garages use them for keeping vehicles. Many people use them for storage purposes and in that case, other factors come into play. There has to be a place for the garage to be accessed daily on foot. Pedestrian access is built in many garage doors to facilitate this so that the whole door does not have to be opened every time a person enters the garage. In order to maintain a constant temperature in the garage, insulated doors can be installed as well.
3. Remote Controlled Garage Door – When the doors are large, remote controlled doors are preferred by people to make it easy and comfortable to use. However, the garage needs to have extra space to store the power outlet and supply. Simple hand held devices are also made available these days to reduce the hassles. Common controlling devices are switches, card readers, digital keypads, and print scanners.

[caption id="attachment_3059" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Pink and brown theme - courtesy of livebreathedecor.com[/caption]
For a while, we were seeing pink and brown everywhere. This is a nice enough color if you are decorating a child's bedroom, but you will find that it gets really cloying, really fast if you have it in your living room. Before you know it, you will start to wonder if you are living in a cake box. This style was cute for a while, but it really was too cute to ever become a classic. Most of us now associate it with affected design, so give it a pass.
Arm Yourself with the Federal Enforcement Laws of Your Nation - - Defense System – Protective Armor of a Nation
[caption id="attachment_929" align="aligncenter" width="450"] Defense system - courtesy of rpdefense.over-blog.com[/caption]
The defense system of a nation such as the army, navy, and air force ensure that the nation is protected from hostile attacks from neighboring countries, enemy nations, or warring nations. The loss that is encountered during an attack is ghastly and has bad repercussions on the hurt people, loved ones of hurt people as well as the unhurt citizens of the attacked country. World wars are particularly very destructive as not just one or few but a slew of countries are affected severely in the process.
Robust Defense System – A Dire Need
If the defense system of a nation is always on the vigil, proactive, sharp, intuitive, bent to make the enemy surrender, or aggressive enough to destroy the enemies, that nation is a lucky one to have such protectors. If the defense is weak, the whole nation suffers its dire consequences. Having a sound, strong, and foolproof defense system in place is crucial to a country’s survival. The formulation of defense laws and their enforcement play a vital role during distressing times like an impending enemy attack.

It is also important to go through each room and cover any electrical outlets along the walls. This will prevent electrocution. Parents who own a large amount of electronics will want to use surge protectors and extension cords that have safety covers for the unused outlets.

Every safety system in the house should be checked before the newborn comes home. Smoke detectors, file alarms and especially carbon monoxide detectors should be functional and should have the batteries replaced regularly. Additional detectors should be installed in the room with the newborn. Fire extinguishers should be charged and placed in an accessible location in case of an emergency. The Don’ts of DIY Plumbing - #Diy, #Plumbing - The world of plumbing has many obstacles and hazards. When it comes to tackling plumbing projects yourself at home, experience is key. With plumbing systems even a slight miscalculation or error in judgment can be a costly mistake. In the worst scenarios, errors can be very destructive as well. For complex plumbing projects for which you have little experience, it is often better to resign to pay and call a professional plumber. If things go wrong doing the job yourself, you could end up paying a lot more to fix the problem and damage you caused than a plumber costs.
[caption id="attachment_3034" align="aligncenter" width="450"] DIY plumber in action - courtesy of bestplumbingofca.com[/caption]
Some home plumbing maintenance is routine and can be easily resolved with the right tools and a little time reading some tutorials. Other issues like running new pipes, messing with the water heater, or dealing with a severe leak may be best left to a professional with the experience to make the fix right the first time. When you’re weighing whether or not to take charge of a plumbing problem yourself or call an expert, heed the experiences of those who have tried and failed.

[caption id="attachment_925" align="aligncenter" width="300"] immigration reform - photo courtesy of seattletimes.com[/caption]
Living up to his promise, the main framework for a comprehensive immigration reform (CIR) has been slowly taking shape. The reform will not only address the estimated 11 million undocumented and illegal immigrants currently present in the United States, but also fix someone of the many problems with the existing immigration and visa system in the United States for all manners of immigrants.
Immigration Reform Raises Questions on Amnesty
Though, talks of an Amnesty has been raised, especially in the last few months, American citizens seem to be afraid of what a full blown amnesty may mean for their future employment opportunities as well as the overall impact it may have on the national economy. Providing legal employment opportunities to 11 million illegal immigrants, possibly even more, is no joking matter and thus has encouraged ongoing heated debates among the lawmakers of the nation.
Making a Place for Security in Your Beautiful Home - #SecurityEquipment - As a 21st century family, both security and style are important to you. You know that security systems can offer a world of benefits and make your house less-appealing to intruders. However, what are some ways you can blend these security elements in without compromising the beauty of your home?
Limit The Gadgets
Try to choose as few gadgets as possible to get the ultimate protection. For example, let's say that you have an open floor plan. Depending upon where the partial walls and other potential obstructions sit, you might not need a glass break sensor for each room.
[caption id="attachment_3028" align="aligncenter" width="450"] glass break sensor - courtesy of blog.vivint.com[/caption]
Speak with your security company about the amount you can purchase to still have total protection. Hiding one of these devices is much easier than trying to keep three, four or more of them uncovered.
[caption id="attachment_3029" align="aligncenter" width="400"] tiny camera picture from lightfield-forum.com[/caption]
When you want to have cameras outside the perimeter of your home, choose the smallest ones that you possibly can. This does not only help to hide them from the eyes of guests, but small cameras can protect you. If someone does damage your property, you will be able to easily identify who the perpetrator is while making sure your home does not look like a high security jewelry store.
Bars for Windows
In addition to your security system, you might also want to have bars on the windows. The thought of bars can be quite stifling when it comes to style endeavors. Fortunately, bars are available in all different colors and styles. At first glance, you may not even notice that these bars are intended for security features. Choose a soft white shade for a country cottage or a light color in the neutral family to match your rustic mansion. Whatever you choose, you can certainly find a match for your home.

Carpet Cleaning and Additional Considerations When Choosing Carpet for Your Home - #CarpetCleaning, #CarpetDecoration - The excitement of moving into a new home can be enhanced by all the decorating ideas you just can’t wait to get started on. One important decision you’ll have to make is your carpeting choice, and it can’t be a decision that you make in a rush or without a little research. Carpet is a big investment and will, hopefully, be with you for a very long time. It is one of the first things someone will notice about your home and something you will rely on to contribute to a comfortable environment for you and your family. Durability, price, style and carpet cleaning are a few specific things to consider when you’re out shopping around for just the perfect floor to accent the rest of your home and belongings.
[caption id="attachment_3024" align="aligncenter" width="450"] carpet decoration - courtesy of favim.com[/caption]
A carpet’s density is determined by how thick it is. A good way to establish density is by seeing how far down your fingers will go into a sample. If they go straight through to the backing you may want to steer clear of this one as it’s a good indicator that it won’t stand up for long under heavy foot traffic. Keep in mind that the denser a carpet, you’ll usually find it isn’t too plush. If that’s an important factor to you, keep looking until you find a compromise between the two elements.

Alternative uses for wallpaper in the home - #Scrapbook, #Wall - Vintage and recycled trends have never been more popular. Using the old to make new things beautiful is not only acceptable, it’s downright essential for the budding home design enthusiast or creative soul. If you have been decorating of late, or just fancy a clear out, there are some great ways to use up old scrap wallpaper for lovely new ideas.
Create a Scrapbook
[caption id="attachment_3016" align="aligncenter" width="450"] scrapbook - photo courtesy of debbieoverton.com[/caption]
If you have some memories to store away, why not jazz up a scrapbook into a gorgeous personalised photo album. Retailers like Hobbycraft stock plain A4 booklets with good quality thick paper which will give you free rein to decorate as you please. Lay the book flat with pages facing upwards and fold the edges of your wallpaper over in neat lines. Stick, staple or Sellotape your paper down and voila! You can also stick down mismatching cut-out squares of wallpaper before placing photos in the book to give extra detail. Add glitter, sparkles or diamantes to your preference.
Make Your Own Frames
If you want plain or painted walls but have patterned paper lying around, you could create your very own framed artwork. Taking three plain wooden frames bought cheaply and cutting out the wallpaper to fit the backing board, you can fix this down to make a feature print. Once the frames are back on, you can hang up as many or as little as you like. Go crazy with all your different scraps to create a gallery on corridors or living space walls.
Update Your Furniture & Fittings
Another good way to recycle can be to stick long rectangular pieces of spare paper to the back of bookshelves or kitchen cabinets. This makes for a bespoke look against plain or painted wood and can really freshen up a tired old piece of your furniture into a stylish talking point.
If you have a glass topped table that needs brightening up, or some bedroom furniture, stick paper underneath the table to the dimensions of the glass or glue your spares to the bottom of pull-out drawers. The trick is to keep it subtle, you don’t want wallpaper absolutely everywhere! Think small splashes of colour in places you wouldn’t expect.
