This article seems particularly misleading. While strengthening synapses is certainly conducive to learning, one must strengthen the âoecorrectâ synapses while simultaneously letting the âoeincorrectâ ones become less strong. Furthermore, over-strengthening a synapse could be just as detrimental as having one which is too weak.
Consider this example: Imagine if I took your brain and set every synapse to 100% strong. The seizures from the resulting neural activity would probably be utterly terrifying to watch.
I sure hope that the research behind this does not imply that strengthen is always a desired thing, and this misleading article is simply the product of a deep misunderstanding on the part of its author.
