Ekta adds to her security cover

Following a recent controversy and a near hit-and-run incident, Ekta Kapoor beefs up her personal security to two armed gunmen and four bodyguards She may be the queen of small screen soaps and a feared one at that, but Ekta Kapoor no longer feels safe in this city. Following the incident, which Mumbai Mirror reported on June 14, where Ekta was almost run over by a car while she was jogging on the road along Juhu beach, she has decided to increase her own security. Earlier, three bodyguards used to accompany Ekta wherever she went. These men were never armed though. But now, four bodyguards and two gunmen track every step Ekta takes and follow her wherever she goes. A source close to Ekta says, "She has six people close to her to ensure that she is well protected. Moreover, there is a car that follows her. This car always has a few more people who have been especially hired to protect her." Ekta beefed up her security at her mother Shobha Kapoor's insistence. Her father Jeetendra too was extremely worried after the jogging incident. So agitated was he post the incident, that he had reprimanded the cops at Juhu police station for having taken no action in the near hit-and-run complaint lodged by his daughter. Obviously, his daughter's account of the driver's abrasive behaviour had got Jeetendra even more worried. Apparently, the man behind the wheels had allegedly gotten off the car and screamed at Ekta saying, "Aapko footpath pe chalna nahin aata kya? (Don't you know how to walk on the footpath?)" There is another reason why the Kapoor family has been worried of late. Haji Mastan's adopted son Sundar Shekhar Mirza recently sent a legal notice to Balaji Telefilms saying that the Kapoors did not take their consent before making Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai. The story of the film is supposedly based on the life of Mirza's late father. "The family wants to take no chances," says the source, "Shobhaji told Ekta that she must have more people around her who can ensure that no untoward incidents happen to her. Ekta could not argue with her mother and had to obey." When contacted, Ekta did not deny the story. She simply said, "It's a very personal matter. I don't want to discuss this."

    â€The Procession†of the brides

Modernity, glamour, exquisiteness and magnificence are synonymous with Indian weddings, and ace designer Tarun Tahilani promises to bring alive just that with his latest line of exquisite bridal wear in the first-of-its-kind bridal couture event in Julyâ€10. Believes Tahiliani, â€oeA wedding is the most important occasion in a personâ€s life. It is the biggest event across all cultures, especially in India.” How would you describe your latest collection? â€oeMy range is a celebration of the wedding fervour. It brings together each aspect of it under a roof in an ambience that reflects the true spirit of an Indian wedding,” he explains. Fine luxury brands such as DLF Emporio, Swarovski and Forevermark will come together to support Tarun in his rendition of bridal ensemble. The staggering procession, clothes, jewels and accessories will be arranged with live performers on interactive models, fibre glass animals in traditional livery and luxury cars. According to the designer, the energies and the irrepressible Indian zest for colour, drape and luxury manifests itself beautifully in the fine couture collection. â€oeThe highlight and the mainstay of the exposition is to showcase the intricate Indian bridal couture in the setting it was designed to be worn in.” Worth looking out for will be the use of jewellery and luxury objects that illustrate the progression of design styles, techniques and motifs. Says the man at the helm of affairs, â€oeIt will be a perfect place for soon-to-be-brides to chance upon that stone which will seal their wedding vows or a neckpiece which will pass down generations as a precious heirloom. The range will also include a fine display of accessories from luxury watches, travel trunks, hand bags and footwear to name a few.” The expo is all set to have a grand opening night with a lavish six-course sit-down dinner for the affluent and cultural scions of the city. A whole range of artifacts, crystal chandeliers, traditional and exotic flower arrangements, dramatic lighting and effects, theatrical sound and musical performance will only add drama to the event.

I want to do Tamil films: Cyrus

The racing track at Irungattukottai was suddenly buzzing with activity last weekend. After all, when funny man Cyrus Sahukar is on the track, how can the people there not come alive? The VJ and actor, who was in the city recently to shoot for one of his television shows, had a whale of time, zipping ahead on the race track and interacting with the participants of the show. His hectic shooting schedule, however, didn't deter him from posing untiringly for our lensman. Posing near a racing car, Cyrus almost looked like a professional racer. "Don't go by my appearance. I recently learned driving while shooting for my latest film. But I can definitely pose like a professional," he starts off in his witty style. So, how is it back being in Chennai? "Fantastic! I have been coming to the city for quite sometime now. My sister lives in Tiruvanmiyur and I often drop in to get away from the madness of Mumbai. And when I'm here, I gorge on all the South Indian delicacies. I'm a big foodie and a trip to Chennai gives me another reason to experiment with food." The actor has just wrapped up the shooting for his forthcoming project with Sonam Kapoor and Abhay Deol. "I play Randhir Gambhir in the film, which is an adaptation of the British novel, Emma, written Jane Austen. I cannot reveal anything more than that," he says matter-of-factly. The actor was last seen as a sleazy photographer in delhi-6 and a radio jockey in Rang De Basanti. Has Cyrus' focus shifted to Bollywood now? "Not exactly. I love to do interesting work, be it on television, radio or films. I do not want to be stuck with a particular medium. After all, variety is the spice of life. If I get an offer in Tamil films, I would love to take the plunge. I have watched Alaipayuthe and trust me, the film is mind-blowing. And while shooting for a Tamil film, I can indulge in the crispy dosas and hot sambhar," he beams. Cyrus Broacha, Nikhil Chinapa and Cyrus Sahukar are known as the life of television. Is there any competition among the trio? "It's more than a decade that we've been working together and I do not remember a single day when we had an argument. We always manage to pull each other's leg. We are funny men, after all," says Cyrus. Cyrus proudly calls himself a `man of accidents'. "Yes! During the shooting of my latest film, I was suffering from malaria. And when I was almost recovered and returned for the shoot, I was hit by another bout of malaria. And when I recuperated from the disease, a sink fell on my leg while I was washing my hands. I also encountered several accidents in the car while learning to drive." Finally, on future plans, Cyrus says, "I'm working on a few television shows and reading scripts. I just hope that another sink doesn't fall on my leg. It did hurt a lot!"

    Review: Eclipse

The contest to win Bella's heart may be more serious than ever, but that doesn't mean her romantic rivals are entirely without a sense of humour. When Edward (Robert Pattinson) reluctantly delivers his beloved Bella (Kristen Stewart) into the protection of a typically topless Jacob (Taylor Lautner) midway through the third installment of the Twilight saga, the vampire rightly wonders, "Doesn't he own a shirt?" Leaden and quip-less in the previous entries, the buff werewolf has also grown wittier. As they both watch over Bella in a tent high up on a snowy mountain, Jacob insists that it's up to him to save her from hypothermia - by slipping into her sleeping bag and warming her up. "Face it," he says with a grin to the pale-faced Edward, "I am hotter than you." Of course, that debate will continue to rage on, seeing as the film franchise spawned by Stephenie Meyer's young-adult novels has at least two more movies to go. In the meantime, Eclipse may find favour with more than the millions of Twihards already devoted to the series. Better staged and more briskly paced than its predecessors, yet just as swoony in its evocation of grand passion and impossible love, Eclipse rates as the most assured piece of filmmaking the franchise has produced. The fact that director David Slade, screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg and the cast allow for more moments of lightness than Meyer's angst-ridden universe previously allowed actually makes the material seem richer and wiser. That said, we're not talking Chekhov here; we're not up to the moral complexity or stylistic audacity of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, either. When we last left Bella and Edward, he had just proposed marriage to her. She agreed, on the condition that she too be made immortal, a stipulation that had already been decreed by the Volturi overlords with whom the couple tangled in New Moon. Edward remains unhappy about this part of the prenuptial agreement, due to the pain and suffering that will be caused by her vampirization.

    Hulu unveils $9.99 premium service

Hulu, the online TV and film portal, has finally rolled out a subscription service, according to a note posted to the site on Tuesday. For $9.99 a month, subscribers of Hulu Plus get access to a full seasons worth of their favorite TV shows--and even past seasons in some cases--and "not just a handful of trailing episodes" that the free-version of Hulu offers, according to CEO Jason Kilar, who wrote the note. Hulu Plus marks the first time the service has charged for content and its arrival has been long anticipated. Supported by Disney, NBC Universal, and News Corp., some of Hulus backers, especially News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch, have been pushing for a paid service for over a year. The word out of Hollywood for a long time is that advertising just doesnt provide the kind of return that the studios and networks are accustomed to generating. Apparently, when it comes to premium TV shows, the ad-supported model works for television but not for the Web. A monthly service fee may not sit well with some Hulu fans. While the free Hulu service is still available, Internet TV fans have grown accustomed to getting content for free. Critics have noted that Hulu was the first service to actually seize market share away from illegal file-sharing sites. They say that throwing up a pay wall may do nothing more than send people back to pirate sites. But a pay service like the one Hulu proposes could prove attractive to people who dont want to risk violating copyright law and dont mind paying $10 for the ease of watching Internet-distributed video on their TV sets anytime they choose. To some cable subscribers, Hulu Plus could offer an incentive to dump their cable bills. Hulu Plus represents nothing less than the first legal and mainstream Web TV service to offer a significant alternative to cable providers. Sure, Netflixs streaming service offers the best movie selection but that service doesnt have access to the same breadth of TV shows that Hulu Plus offers. Hulu has also made up ground on Netflix when comparing the number of devices that feature the services. Hulu Plus will be available initially to those invited and will be accessible on a range of computers, video game consoles, and handsets, including Apples iPad and iPhone, select Samsung TVs and Blu-ray players, and eventually Sonys PlayStation 3. On Tuesday, Microsoft confirmed that the Xbox 360 will also offer Hulu Plus sometime early next year. Video quality on many shows will be available at 720p. Another big winner could be Apple, which will offer Hulu Plus on the iPad and iPhone. Owners of these devices can watch such shows as "30 Rock," "The Office," "Greys Anatomy," "Desperate Housewives," and "House."

Venus Williams Crashes Out Of Wimbledons

Five-time champion Venus Williams was ousted in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon on Tuesday, losing 6-2, 6-3 to 82nd-ranked Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria. The second-seeded Williams, who had reached the Wimbledon final in eight of the past 10 years, was undone by a slew of unforced errors and double faults in the biggest upset of the womenâ€s tournament. In another surprise, 21st-seeded Vera Zvonareva of Russia rallied to beat two-time U.S. Open winner Kim Clijsters 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 to reach her first Wimbledon semifinal. The loss rules out another all-sister final between Venus and Serena Williams, the defending champion who faced Chinaâ€s Li Na in a later quarterfinal. Pironkova also beat Williams in the first round of the Australian Open in 2006, but few gave her a chance of replicating the feat on the grass at the All England Club, where Williams has dominated for a decade. But Williams was clearly off her game and Pironkova took advantage. Williams committed 29 unforced errors, compared to just six for Pironkova. She had five double-faults on serve, including back-to-back doubles in two games. Pironkova denied Williams her 200th career victory on grass and spoiled the prospect of a fifth Wimbledon final against Serena, who beat her older sister last year for her third Wimbledon title. Pironkova becomes the first woman representing Bulgaria to reach a Grand Slam semifinal in the Open era. Bulgarian-born Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere was representing Switzerland when she reached the U.S. Open semifinals in 1992 and 1993. Pironkova broke Williams twice in the first set, winning four straight games after a 2-all tie, then finished the set with a backhand passing shot down the line. After Williams broke to go up 2-1 in the second set, it looked as though she might be able to take command. But Pironkova broke right back in the next game, which included the shot of the match. After Williams hit a forehand drop volley, the Bulgarian raced forward and flipped a backhand lob winner over Williams†head. Pironkova swung her arm in an uppercut celebration. Down 5-2, Williams saved two match points on serve, but Pironkova served out the match in the next game. After Williams missed a forehand volley, Pironkova squealed and fell on her back on the turf. Pironkova earned a semifinal berth against Zvonareva, who came back from a set down to beat Clijsters on Centre Court. It was the Russianâ€s first win over Clijsters in six meetings. Clijsters, returning to Wimbledon for the first time since 2006 after coming out of retirement, beat fellow Belgian Justine Henin on Monday and was viewed as a potential title threat. The eighth-seeded Clijsters looked in command after sailing through the first set, but the match turned in the Russianâ€s favor after she broke to go up 3-1 in the second. Clijsters finished with 36 unforced errors, compared to 19 for Zvonareva. The men had the day off ahead of Wednesdayâ€s quarterfinals.

Make a little haven for your kid

Decorating your son or daughterâ€s bedroom can be a fun task. While most parents go for simple pink or blue interiors with kids today having a say in how they want their room done up, things have definitely changed. Not to fret. You can make your job easy by selecting a theme that your kid is fond of - it can be their favourite colour or cartoon character, superhero or a theme based on one of their favourite hobbies. Make sure you take your childâ€s point of view into consideration, but also keep in mind the practicalities in terms of your budget and execution. While deciding on the colour scheme for the room, stick to mellow shades or pastels. White is a strict no-no. Avoid very dark shades. If your kid is under 10 years of age, thereâ€s a great chance he/she may scribble on the walls and white will show everything. Create a little space for your little one to do his/her art work. If you are willing to splurge a little on the room, you can get an artist to paint your childâ€s favourite character on the bedroom wall or go for a wallpaper. Most boys love getting Superman or Spiderman painted on their wall, while girls might opt for butterflies, flowers or fairy characters. This adds colour to the room and sets the theme for the other interiors. Kids tend to change their mind about what they want, so try and include some removable elements in the room like paper lanterns, wind chimes, and other wall hangings. If they are fond of birds, hang paper birds from hooks on the ceiling for a unique look. Also, try and get matching bright curtains. Let your child pick them out in colours and prints that he/she likes.

Pakistan should act on Headleys revelations, PM tells Obama

Toronto: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has told US President Barack Obama that Pakistan should to act on information provided by Lashkar-e-Taiba operative David Coleman Headley in order to stop anti-India terrorist activities from its soil. Raising the issue during his meeting Sunday with Obama on the sidelines of the G-20 Summit, the prime minister said Pakistan should show its commitment to stopping anti-Indian terrorist activities to promote dialogue between the two neighbours. "They spoke about the ongoing interrogations about the activities of David Coleman Headley and said that both India and the US have mutual interest that information that is coming out of this interrogation is taken seriously by Pakistan with a view to controlling and eliminating terrorist elements on its territory," Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao told media persons here. The talks between Manmohan Singh and Obama took place two days after Indias Home Minister P. Chidambaram took up with his Pakistani counterpart New Delhis continuing concerns over terror emanating from the Pakistani territory. Headley, who changed his given name of Daood Gilani in 2006, is now in US custody and has confessed to his role in inspecting sites for the 26/11 Mumbai attack during questioning by a four-member team from Indias National Investigation Agency
