I've been a subscriber to Last.fm for a while until recently I changed to Rdio.com, a paid service for unlimited music streaming.
I've been telling everybody I know that sites like these are going to be the saving of the music industry. And then I've also had my doubts because I don't really know how much individual bands get paid per play and although I searched the info wasn't available.
Until this indie band broke it down for me and the answer....
it's peanuts.
Something will have to change or I'll have to carry on buying music downloads.

You had better have an answer to this, because your existence depends on it. My answer is that the Stumbleupon generates enduring traffic because shares are made based on personal relationships. What is additionally distinctive about those relationships at Stumbleupon is that the relationships themselves have developed from shared interests. I can easily share personal passions with my SU friends, which would be potentially sensitive, or even explosive, with my family and "real" life friends, because the relationships were developed from these shared passions. The result is often intimately informed referrals about shared interests in the context of personal relationships. Ask the next sales professional you see what he or she could do with that.

Maybe my analysis is all wet. A good statistician cum systems analyst could figure this out, track down the actual source of your Stumbleupon super-referrals. I understand you want to establish an identity, and the identity Stumbleupon is creating for itself is not what you planned. I also do not know the costs behind supporting a photoblogging site. The important question becomes did you accidentally stumble upon a powerful referral engine that makes your site work, or does the photoblogging detract from the identity that actually makes your creation vital?

A business is like a child, and while parents may have created the child, and while they clearly have great control over a child's world, the business, and the child, both have an identity of their own. It is clear to me that you are messing with the fundamental chemistry of your offspring, and it is important that you have a skilled surgeon in the operating room who knows what they are doing.

So is photoblogging an expensive wart, or a vital organ? I wish you the best of luck in figuring that out, and hope that your business realizes all you desires for it.
