In 1960's, only american cars and some european cars could be seen in Turkey. However, the economical condition were poor enough and it was very difficult to import cars and their spare parts due to the lack of foreign currency. After the military coup d'état in May 1960, the President Cemal Gursel insisted on the project of developing a national car industry in the country. A group of engineers from different state institutions came together for this project in Railway Car Factory in Eskisehir and started to execute this project.
