A good filtering systemisn't just about collecting a list of bad sites and warning users about them. Instead, it requires all of these traits:

* A low false-positive rate
* Clear, publicly-available criteria for determining which sites are listed
* Information about why a particular site is listed
* A transparent, responsive process for requesting removal of incorrect or outdated listings
* Support and education for owners of compromised sites

Microsoft yesterday warned of a new attack underway against a flaw in the ActiveX control for the Snapshot Viewer for Microsoft Access, used by IE. There is not yet any patch available for the zero-day security hole, and the attacks likely focus on business targets.

On June 30, 2008 an interview with Trend Micro's CEO was published on Zdent.co.uk titled "Antivirus industry lied for 20 years "- it makes me wonder what is going to be different in the 21st year?

Keyloggers pose a real threat, targeting sensitive passwords (such as for online banking). Vendors have creative ideas to handle this issue...

Interesting to note

Of the over 213,000 malware-hosting sites analyzed last month, 52% were hosted by servers running Chinese IP addresses.

Ironically, the U.S. network with the largest number of sites spreading malware is Google, one of Stopbadware.org's prime sponsors and the source of the site data.
