A documentary clearing house - they carry a lot of amazing stuff. I am really glad I Stumbled Upon this baby...
More info about one of America's finest - Colbert for President!
An interview with Eric Drysdale - writer for the Colbert Report.
An interesting editorial on the politics leading to and tenured in the Iraq war. Accountability?
Very interesting report about similarities amongst genomes - you can't simply count nucleotide sequences in common when comparing species and organisms' genomes (i.e., human and chimps have 99% of DNA identical) because it doesn't take into consideration where starts and stops are - just stretches of strands that are in common. The full story will need to investigate expressed genes to evaluate similarities or to better understand what the effects of genes are.
Join Cecil Adams, the world's smartest human being, in fighting ignorance. This reference librarian either knows the answers or knows where to find them. Read ALL of the books compiling his weekly columns too - always something to learn!
This is a sweet opinion piece by Michael Moore expressing positive changes in store for the future of American politics. Whether such lofty goals can be accomplished without too much heartache is another question.
Op-Ed Piece on the OJ Simpson book...
I agree with this op-ed piece from the LA Times. Sadly, crime does (can?) pay, and even then at the expense of the erosion of public mores.
And Rupert Murdoch is on my evil list for more than this. Fox so-called 'news' is a major contributor to the division of peoples through misinformation. The sad thing is so many of its viewers are ignorant of the role they play by allowing themselves to be misinformed.
These are some interesting reprints of Bush administration attitudes toward the Taliban before September 11. The first is about the successful Taliban crushing of Afghanistan opium trade, the second is about the Bush administration's support of the Taliban government despite them knowlingly harboring Osama bin Laden, and the third is shortly after September 11, reporting CIA failures in Afghanistan.
Shortly after the Bushies rewarded the Taliban for their efforts to stop opium production, September 11th occurred, and now the Department of State claims the Taliban are the true profiteers of the drug tade, both before and since they banned the growing of poppies. Who to believe? Or more precisely when was the government misrepresenting reality and for what purpose?
I only semi-like this web site. For anybody going through marriage issues, this site has three seasons worth of shows on marriage and relationship themes. Be FOREWARNED that some of the shows NEED to be taken with a grain of salt as they may be overly influenced by religious and prudish themes. Sometimes the so-called experts are a bit self-interested in curing the 'problems' they discuss. Nonethless, the show does a service by getting the topics out there and bringing counseling to the people - for FREE!
A real live case of a coma person coming back to consciousness. Amazing stuff - and scary too. Thank your lucky stars you are alive and well.
A controversial law in France requires that companies share DRM techniques which is a step forward - but allows limits on open source use of such technology. This includes making software on Linux for simply playing DVDs illegal. Another example of technological ignorance amongst lawmakers?
An interesting resource on some very cool ideas about the evolution of human behaviors.
This is a great documentary programme focusing on global climatic issues. When airplanes were grounded over North America following Sept 11, it gave climatologists an unprecedented opportunity to examine the effects of contrails on weather. The temperature was a whopping one degree higher than the days preceeding and following, controlled for historical weather patterns. Sunlight hitting the contrails fails to make it to earth - resulting in a 'dimmer' planet. This was only the first of several lines of evidence that pollution counteracts global warming, and changes global weather patterns. This means CO2 has an even harsher warming effect than current models assume. Extrapolating with new values suggests that we have less time to control global warming than previously thought. With the worst case scenario including the melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet, raising of ocean levels 7-8 metres and the release of the even worse Greenhouse gas methane from methyl-hydrate stored under all of the worlds oceans. At which point, we're cooked. For more information...
A brief summary of findings about good writing. I fear that I don't mince words enough. Sigh.
