Don't defend or deny it. For example, if someone blindsides you with the unfair allegation, "You women are so emotional!" and you protest with, "We're not emotional!" you've just proven their point. Instead, put the conversational ball back in their court with, "What do you mean?" Asking them to explain themselves will cause them to reveal the real issue, and you can address that instead of reacting to their attack. Suppose an upset client claims, "You don't care about your customers." A hurtful denial of, "That's not true. We pride ourselves on our quality service," would only serve to turn the exchange into a "Yes we do. No you don't" debate. Instead ask, "What makes you think that?" The client may harrumph, "I've left three messages and no one's called back." Aaahh, now you know what's really bothering her and you can give her the attention she wants and deserves."

"Quick Find" in Firefox can be incredibly irritating. In fact, always. This sums up, very simply, how to turn it off! :)

I can honestly say that I'm not a fan of the phrase, "get over it". In this instance though, it is Essential to "get over" any resistance that inhibits one's growth as a human.

"If you resist reading a book or taking a workshop on communication, my best advice for you is get over it. Nobody is born knowing how to communicate and very few of us learn how to do it well when we're growing up. You're not responsible for not having been taught how to communicate about your feelings. However, once you know that you need to do something and that there are resources and people who can help you, you are responsible for making it happen. Do yourself a favor and find the support you need. Read a book, take a workshop, or work with a therapist. The payoff is worth it."
