- CARGO
As I am a ship, long held out at sea,
sails aloft, bellied out and taut,
bow rising to the sun and bowing to the deep --
as I am that ship, wide-bellied and low,
decks low down to water, I move slowly
to my port, long past due home,
last of the fleet and surest.
You hold me both back and steady,
both my ballast and my cargo.
Your weight holds me down, secure in the sea and slow.
This impatient calm at sea will bring content
only when I, with my cargo, reach home.
You are what keeps me from my port
and the reason I set sail.

My very own web artifact, "Hiving a Swarm," a story I assembled some ten years ago from photos I took on a fine summer day nearly fifteen years earlier. It's gotten a number of comments and correspondence over the years.

This stray, "Sweetie Pie," lives in our barn. She repels all feline boarders, but allows the big monkeys to pay court.

A couple of weeks ago, we took a drive on the Delmarva peninsula, found our way the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum -- a fine place to spend a sunny afternoon.

This year, the discount hydrangeas, all raggedy and weak-looking two years ago, have come into their own.
