Where I lost it at The Police concert - Atlanta/07/Phillips Arena
It started out great, but I didn't really think the night was going to be mystical, magical, I just expected a good time and was trying to forget that the '80s were, uh, 20+ years ago, my god.

But I think it was this, the third number, a three-song montage, where I recognized I liked the way they changed the tempo on the beginning of the montage "Voices in My Head" before shifting into "When the World is Running Down." AND although I played the rollers off the Zenyatta Mondatta tape I had, so long ago, I wasn't sure what it segued into until the refrain . . . it started to hit me: I had always sung the lyrics . . . never really knowing except vaguely what they meant . . .until now, and DAMN, it seemed really, really wise . . . not trite like a re-look at most 80s music.

And when the bridge to Summers' guitar solo hit (about 3:20 in the vid below, I think) the magic grabbed me . . . it was f '' ''ing BETTER, and I mean really better and played more heartfelt than way back then. And I was there in the Omni the LAST time they played here 24 years ago. That feeling of BEING, really BEING at a concert that seemed meaningful . . . a time machine that even works for the cynical. By the time Summers' solo started to jazz with Sting's ancient bass, and then the refrain comes back, I was in crisis/joy. Tears running down my face, nose all swelling up stuffy, not sure why and not sure I wanted anybody to see . . .

Then it hit me: Since they had not been compelled to senselessly beat them out over and over and over again for bucks in the past 20+ years, it impacted like it was "new," since the work was meaningful and timeless to begin with. They performed with a vigor, and seemed to re-interpret them enthusiastically for today. Admittedly, they may not have sounded as tight together as a three-piece as was possible in their '20s, one of the criticisms I heard. But most 20-year old athletes aren't 20 percent of their reaction/performance level by their 50's . . . and these guys were 110% by playing on sincerity and guts,and guts is enough.

For my lovely friend Denise-R, who undoubtedly knows volumes more about connecting aesthetics, art, and nature than I. For those who know of the Golden Ratio, a beautiful three minutes.
