Three years ago, the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations released a lengthy report entitled "Livestock's Long Shadow." Among the plethora of environmental problems the livestock industry is accused of contributing to -- water pollution, habit fragmentation and desertification of arable land among them -- climate change figured prominently.

In particular, the report concluded that livestock production accounts for 18%, or one-fifth, of global emissions. This figure is higher than all transportation sources combined."

From the page: Apple announced Monday that it is resigning from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce because it objects to the chamber's recent comments opposing federal efforts to limit greenhouse gases.

Apple is the fourth company, and the first tech company, to part ways with the powerful business federation because of global warming.

"Apple is committed to protecting the environment and the communities in which we operate around the world," Catherine Novelli, Apple's vice president of worldwide government affairs, said in a letter to Thomas Donahue, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's president and CEO. "We strongly object to the Chamber's recent comments opposing the EPA's effort to limit greenhouse gases."
