Green. Happy. Driven. Alive. Warm.

It's difficult to describe one's profile in a few sentences, but I'd love to tell you more over a bottle of wine. I'm heavy into green living, but I'm more yuppie than hippie. I enjoy learning about cool technologies that seek to find balance with the planet and push the human race in a direction that's more friendly to those around us sharing the earth.

Technological developments often are seen as the surest way to reduce societyâ€s dependence on fossil fuels, but one young startup hopes to spur change with an innovative business model. If successful, Metrus Energy's model could usher in a wave of investment in energy efficiency projects. The idea is to enter into long-term contracts with commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities in which Metrus pays the upfront costs of installing energy efficiency measures, such as high-efficiency lighting or building energy management systems, and then shares the resulting savings from lower energy bills.

From the page: "Relaxation of the federal standards, and an explosion of consumer demand, have helped push the organics market into a $23 billion-a-year business, the fastest growing segment of the food industry. Half of the country's adults say they buy organic food often or sometimes, according to a survey last year by the Harvard School of Public Health. "
The Death of a Montana Forest - NYTimes.com
Jul 2, 10:52am    (1 review)  environment  http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/02/garden...
From the page: "It's beyond sad to watch your robust green forest turn red and dead in a matter of a few years. This phenomenon is going on all around the West, from Colorado to Alaska. The forest -- the reason many people moved to the small towns and rural areas of the West -- is disappearing. It's happened before, but never to this degree, and there is no end in sight. Scientists believe the proliferation of beetles is a consequence of a warming climate. Bitter cold temperatures are the only way to keep them in check, and our coldest winter temperatures are now as much as 10 degrees warmer than in the past, which allows the beetles to escape significant winter kill. Now all bets are off. The epidemic will likely be done, experts say, when the bugs run out of food -- when they kill all the trees."

Media Matters: PETA's knack for buzz | MNN - Mother Nature Network
Jun 29, 11:28am    (1 review)  environment, animal-rights, peta, eco  http://www.mnn.com/earth-matters/politic...
From the page: "A willingness to offend potential allies -- feminists, environmentalists, even concentration camp survivors -- in service of the cause can backfire. But at least in PETA's case, it's sharpened the message and pushed the movement forward."The lesson is don't be afraid to be criticized. Stick to your principles," Newkirk advises. "This is America, no one is going to pull your fingers out. They may say nasty things about you. They may not send you their 15 dollars. But at least they'll hear what you tell them.""
Some farmers dropping out of organics | MNN - Mother Nature Network
Jun 29, 10:25am    (1 review)  cooking, environment, food, organic  http://mnn.com/food/farms-gardens/storie...
From the page: "For the first time ever, the U.S. organic foods industry is expected to drop 1.1 percent (down to $5.07 billion) after strong annual gains of 12 to 23 percent annually since 2003. Particularly hard hit is the organic dairy industry -- with high feed costs and falling milk prices eroding profits."

For the singer who cared about the environment -- Neverland should be turned into a memorial park and preserved.
