File this under "things about social media/networking that should be common knowledge". The absolute best, and to me the ONLY way to network is to provide value. What social media tools add to that is a way for the conversation to connect back to you without any extra work on your part.
Why have a signature file on Facebook when your profile is linked to everything you do? Why restrict yourself to tweeting your own links on Twitter when the conversation is what makes people want to visit you and know more about you? No one wants to buy from someone who is desperate to sell.
It's better to show what you know than tell it, and let people come to you instead of trying to choke their stream with your promotion. That's not to say you Never should. Just that it's far more effective to keep it to a minimum.
