The key here is that you can't protect a computer from stupid users, regardless of the operating system. From the article, this is just a backdoor trojan malware which disguises itself as a benevolent piece of software. These have always existed, and always will. Grandma will always click on "cute_puppy_vid.exe", just as some people will always want to help out a Nigerian Prince in need.

The viruses you really want to worry about (which also exist for major OS's) are the ones that can take over your computer without to explicitly doing something moronic. In the past, Windows made it very easy for software to do this, and Macs were better at it. Now, Windows has seriously closed the gap, but OSX is still generally safer.

The bottom 80% (240 million people) are going to get pissed enough, soon enough, that we may face our own Egyptian revolution. Obviously, that's a rough comparison, there are many differences. But there will come a point where all the cheap merchandise cannot make up for the fact that you were foreclosed on and have no health insurance. Then add a generation of college grads each with $100K of unshakable loan debt, who now has no upward mobility and an education--which the plebeians aren't supposed to have...

BUT. Even though we need change, revolution is a bloody thing. A much simpler fix would be to tax the rich (but we saw how far that went in Congress last month).
