Famous for it's huge open cast gold mine in the center of the town and Waihi Beach only 5kms away, it is the perfect place to explore the Southern Coromandel.
Waihi is located on Route 2, the Pacific Coast Highway, which is world famous for its stunning scenery and access to many parts of interest to tourists.
Stop here for a while and sample the many activities, such as Harley Davidson hires to see some of the area, take a trip in the unique Carver, the only tilting vehicle in the world, do off road adventures on a trail bike or try your hand at mountain boarding.
You can stay in budget accommodation, motor camps, and backpackers or spoil yourself at one of the luxury lodges that are situated nearby. There are hot pools, beach walks, night kayaking trips, moped hire, walks in the historic and dramatic Gorge which has a wealth of gold mining history, as well as Bullswool farm where you can get hands on with many different animals.
For something more leisurely, try the steam train from the end of Karangahake Gorge to Waihi and then sample some of the many cafes or restaurants in the area.
There is enough to do here to make it an ideal base from which to explore the stunning Coromandel Peninsula with its beaches, walks, gold mines, art & crafts and so much more.
