  • dreams of flying &*02-08 & Jan von Holleben

    Rated Nov 21 2007 6 reviews photography janvonholleben.com

Way too tired and busy to review this myself, but had to post this link from Gusjde, my lovely and wise Dutch neighbour.

    From the website:
Dreams of Flying by Jan von Holleben

"Crossing the desert on the back of a dog, or searching for lost treasures on the bottom of the ocean. Jan von Holleben's photographs allow children to make their dreams come true.

Jan brings the influences of his parents - a cinematographer and child therapist - to his work. His focus on the visual representation of childhood, 'Child-History' and concepts of 'Playing', come from his teacher training course and he combines these theories with his personal experience and childhood memories. Inspired by classic childhood books as well as modern superheroes, he produces `Dreams of Flying' since 2002 with children from his local neighbourhood in South West Germany - ongoing"

I love long tracking shots in cinema - 'A Touch Of Evil' (Orson Welles), 'Carlito's Way' (De Palma) and more recently the restaurant fight scene in 'Kill Bill' (Tarantino) to name a few.

All use it to bold effect, but I can't ever remember seeing a one-take reverse tracking shot for a music video until now.

This is the video for 'What's a Girl To Do?' from the Mercury Prize nominated Bat for Lashes (Natasha Khan). Next in a long line of highly creative but quite bonkers British solo female artists.

Stick with it, it's great and she deserves to win on Tuesday.
  • Jonathan Harris: the Web's secret stories | Video on TED.com

    Rated Jul 24 2007 14 reviews graphic design ted.com

If it was ever possible to have a mind-crush on a man you have never met, nor are ever likely to,
I've got one on Jonathan Harris .

Jonathan describes himself as an Internet storyteller using the data footprints and digital artefacts people
trail behind them on the web to tell a higher human story. Even more points for self-effacement and modesty
then, as a better description of him would read "21st Century polymath, artist, software programmer extraordinaire
    and internet anthropologist".

He uses web agents and applets to scan the internet for unfiltered content linked to human feelings and emotions
which his exquisite interfaces then organise. His projects range from the intensely personal "We Feel Fine" to
"Universe" - "a tag cloud of global collective consciousness" - via "LoveLines - From Love to Hate" my Valentine's Day '07 post.

I reserve my only criticism for his reviewers to date and not his work. This is not a representation of global collective consciousness - it is a reflection of the Anglophone digitised world. Big difference, but even then still prepare to be amazed.

Looks like a 60's Chanel muse, sounds like Dusty Springfield (though she is said not to like the comparison).
Everything that is good about having ears. Gig of the year for me so far. She is going to be very famous, very soon.

I love this picture. NASA arranged a reunioin of thirty-eight current and retired astronauts this week for the unveiling of the new space shuttle simulator at the Kennedy Space Centre.

    Think of the airmiles..

I'm a big fan of odd things in the wrong place that make you think and Mark Jenkins's work is intruiging. He describes himself as a 3D grafitti artist continuing a childhood obsession with wrapping everything he could with sticky tape to make transparent casts. He likes to leave tape babies in public places. What's equally fascinating is how spooked people are by these tape babies, some photos of which have appeared on Flickr
