- The Associated Press: Colin Powell worries Obama tackling too much
1:07am (1 review) politics http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/arti...- From the page: "Colin Powell worries that President Barack Obama is trying to tackle too many big issues at one time and he offers this advice: take a hard look at costs and consider the additional red tape that will be created.
"The right answer is, `Give me a government that works,'" the former secretary of state said in a television interview to be aired Sunday. "Keep it as small as possible," added Powell, who said he has spoken recently with Obama and stays in touch with him. Powell, a Republican, endorsed Obama last year over the GOP presidential nominee, Arizona Sen. John McCain."

From the page: "Fossil fuels give human civilization around 85% of all our energy. We have depended on carbon based fuels almost exclusively since someone rubbed two sticks together, even before Homo Sapien became 'sapien'. If fossil fuel emissions causes major environmental problems, yes, of course, we must act, with major force and substantial effort. But to undertake such a massive shift at such major cost based only on the opinion of an unaccountable, unaudited international committee would be negligent."

From the page: "Unable to defend the EPA's actions, the climate-change crew -- , led by anonymous EPA officials -- is doing what it does best: trashing Mr. Carlin as a "denier." He is, we are told, "only" an economist (he in fact holds a degree in physics from CalTech). It wasn't his "job" to look at this issue (he in fact works in an office tasked with "informing important policy decisions with sound economics and other sciences.") His study was full of sham science. (The majority of it in fact references peer-reviewed studies.) Where's Mr. Hansen and his defense of scientific freedom when you really need him?
Mr. Carlin is instead an explanation for why the science debate is little reported in this country. The professional penalty for offering a contrary view to elites like Al Gore is a smear campaign. The global-warming crowd likes to deride skeptics as the equivalent of the Catholic Church refusing to accept the Copernican theory. The irony is that, today, it is those who dare critique the new religion of human-induced climate change who face the Inquisition."

- Senate will have tough time passing climate bill, farm lobbyists say |...
Jul 2, 7:04pm (1 review) politics, energy, congress, climate-change, senate http://thepacker.com/Senate-will-have-to...- From the page: "The climate change bill passed in the House by a narrow margin faces an uphill climb in the Senate.
The American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 cleared the House of Representatives by a slim margin of 219 to 212, but some lobbyists believe it is likely to be defeated in the Senate.
The bill -- which calls for steep reductions in greenhouse gas emissions over the next few decades -- caused alarm among many farm groups who said the bill would raise energy prices and reduce the competitiveness of U.S. agriculture.
In addition, Republican members of Congress say the bill is a job-killing energy tax. That may appeal to voters trying to cope with a major recession, observers said.
"It is going to be a house of cards in the Senate," said Rick Krause, senior director of Congressional relations with the American Farm Bureau Federation, Washington, D.C.
Krause said there may be as many as 16 Democrats could be swayed to vote against the bill in the Senate."
