    Afternoon rose
    An Afternoon
As he writes, without looking at the sea,
he feels the tip of his pen begin to tremble.
The tide is going out across the shingle.
    But it isn't that. No,
it's because at that moment she chooses
to walk into the room without any clothes on.
Drowsy, not even sure where she is
for a moment. She waves the hair from her forehead.
Sits on the toilet with her eyes closed,
head down. Legs sprawled. He sees her
    through the doorway. Maybe
she's remembering what happened that morning.
For after a time, she opens one eye and looks at him.
    And sweetly smiles.

    Lost in the forest...
Lost in the forest, I broke off a dark twig
and lifted its whisper to my thirsty lips:
maybe it was the voice of the rain crying,
a cracked bell, or a torn heart.

Something from far off it seemed
deep and secret to me, hidden by the earth,
a shout muffled by huge autumns,
by the moist half-open darkness of the leaves.

Wakening from the dreaming forest there, the hazel-sprig
sang under my tongue, its drifting fragrance
climbed up through my conscious mind

as if suddenly the roots I had left behind
cried out to me, the land I had lost with my childhood---
and I stopped, wounded by the wandering scent.

    I'll be the round about
The words will make you out 'n' out
I'll spend the day your way......
Call it morning driving thru the sound and
    In and out the valley......

    The muses dance and sing
They make the children really ring
I'll spend the day your way
Call it morning driving thru the sound and
    In and out the valley.....

    In and around the lake
Mountains come out of the sky
    and they Stand there
One mile over we'll be there and we'll see you
Ten true summers we'll be there and
    Laughing too
Twenty four before my love you'll see I'll be
    There with you

    I will remember you
Your silhouette will charge the view
    Of distance atmosphere......
Call it morning driving thru the sound and
    Even in the valley......

    In and around the lake
Mountains come out of the sky
    and they Stand there

Ten true summers we'll be there and
    Laughing too ooo oo oo
Twenty four before my love you'll see I'll be
    There with you

Along the drifting cloud the eagle searching
    Down on the land
Catching the swirling wind the sailor sees
    The rim of the land
The eagle's dancing wings create as weather
    Spins out of hand

Go closer hold the land feel partly no more
    Than grains of sand
We stand to lose all time a thousand answers
    By in our hand
Next to your deeper fears we stand
    Surrounded by million years

    I'll be the roundabout
The words will make you out 'n' out
    I'll be the roundabout
The words will make you out 'n' out........

    In and around the lake

Not since the heyday of Robert Moses has the city been host to so many and so new a collection of playgrounds. Supersoft rubber safety surfaces and geodesic domes for climbing, the latest in recreational design, are cropping up all over town. Just last spring the playground on 110th Street and Central Park West reopened after a $600,000 face-lift, its first in more than 70 years. The sprawling Heckscher Playground at the south end of the park was recently redesigned as well, with a moat and a desertlike sand pit, and is so impressive it attracts not only the toddler and grade-school set, but also hordes of teenagers wishing they were little again. The Ancient Playground near the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which used to be one of our favorites, has just been leveled and by next year is scheduled to reopen.

    sky pilot

He blesses the boys as they stand in line
The smell of gun grease and the bayonets they shine
He's there to help them all that he can
To make them feel wanted he's a good holy man

    youtube.com/watch [youtube.com/watch]

    Sky pilot.....sky pilot
    How high can you fly
You'll never, never, never reach the sky

He smiles at the young soldiers
    Tells them its all right
He knows of their fear in the forthcoming fight
Soon there'll be blood and many will die
Mothers and fathers back home they will cry
    Sky pilot.....sky pilot
    How high can you fly
You'll never, never, never reach the sky

He mumbles a prayer and it ends with a smile
    The order is given
    They move down the line
But he's still behind and he'll meditate
But it won't stop the bleeding or ease the hate
As the young men move out into the battle zone
He feels good, with God you're never alone
He feels tired and he lays on his bed
Hopes the men will find courage in the words that he said
    Sky pilot.....sky Pilot
    How high can you fly

You'll never, never, never reach the sky
You're soldiers of God you must understand
The fate of your country is in your young hands
    May God give you strength
    Do your job real well
If it all was worth it
    Only time it will tell

    In the morning they return
    With tears in their eyes
The stench of death drifts up to the skies
A soldier so ill looks at the sky pilot
    Remembers the words
    "Thou shalt not kill"
    Sky pilot.....sky pilot
    How high can you fly
You never, never, never reach the sky

    You've been taking your time
And you've been living on solid air
    You've been walking the line
And You've been living on solid air
Don't know what's going wrong inside
And I can tell you that it's hard to hide when you're living on
    Solid air.

    You've been painting it blue
And you've been looking through solid air
    You've been seeing it through
And you've been looking through solid air
Don't know what's going wrong in your mind,
And I can tell you don't like what you find,
    When you're moving through
    Solid air.

I know you, I love you
And I could be your friend
    I could follow you, anywhere
    Even through solid air.

    You've been stoning it cold
You've been living on solid air
    You've been finding that gold
You've been living on solid air
    I don't know what's going on inside
I can tell you that it's hard to hide

    Solid air, solid air.

    You've been getting too deep
You've been living on solid air
    You've been missing your sleep
And you've been moving through solid air
I don't know what's going on in your mind
But I know you don't like what you find
    When you're moving through
    Solid air, solid air.

Roswell Smith's handcolored 1851 map of the United States and Territories

Sugar magnolia, blossoms blooming, head's all empty and I don't care,
Saw my baby down by the river, knew she'd have to come up soon for air.

    youtube.com/watch [youtube.com/watch]

Sweet blossom come on, under the willow, we can have high times if you'll abide
We can discover the wonders of nature, rolling in the rushes down by the riverside.

She's got everything delightful, she's got everything I need,
Takes the wheel when I'm seeing double, pays my ticket when I speed

Well, she comes skimmin' through rays of violet, she can wade in a drop of dew,
She don't come and I don't follow, waits backstage while I sing to you.

Well, she can dance a Cajun rhythm, jump like a Willy's in four wheel drive.
She's a summer love in the spring, fall and winter. She can make happy any man alive.

Sugar magnolia, ringing that bluebell, caught up in sunlight, come on out singing
I'll walk you in the sunshine, come on honey, come along with me.

She's got everything delightful, she's got everything I need,
A breeze in the pines in the summer night moonlight, crazy in the sunlight yes indeed.

Sometimes when the cuckoo's crying, when the moon is half way down,
Sometimes when the night is dying, I take me out and I wander around, I wander 'round.

Sunshine, daydream, walking in the tall trees, going where the wind goes
Blooming like a red rose, breathing more freely,
Light out singin', I'll walk you in the morning sunshine
Sunshine, daydream. Sunshine, daydream. Walking in the sunshine.

ving of Abolishionist artist John Sartain's Return ofOriginal steel-plate engra the Dove

John Sartain was a printmaker, miniaturist and portraitist. Born in London in 1808, he was apprenticed to engraver John Swain before coming to America in 1830 and settling in Philadelphia. He was instrumental in popularizing mezzotints by copying John Neagle's "Patriotism and Age."

Sartain was a prolific engraver, creating hundreds of illustrations for magazines, including his own "Sartain's Magazine" (begun in 1848). In the late 1850s, he started to make large engravings of major imaginative and historical works, including those of Benjamin West and Peter F. Rothermel.

Sartain was an active member of the Philadelphia art community. He was a teacher and officer at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women and was the art director of the Centennial Exposition at Philadelphia in 1876. He also exhibited works at several European expositions. Four of his eight children became painters or engravers: Samuel (1830-1906), Henry (1833-circa 1895), Emily (1841-1927), and William (1843-1924).

    People get ready
    There's a train a-coming
    You don't need no baggage
    You just get on board
    All you need is faith
    To hear the diesels humming
    Don't need no ticket
    You just thank the Lord

    People get ready
    For the train to Jordan
    Picking up passengers
    From coast to coast
    Faith is the key
Open the doors and board them
    There's room for all
    among the loved the most

    There ain't no room
    for the hopeless sinner
Who would hurt all mankind just
    To save his own
    Have pity on those
    whose chances are thinner
    Cause there's no hiding place
    From the Kingdom's Throne

    So people get ready
    for the train a-comin'
    You don't need no baggage
you just get on board !
