From the page: "Better for Farmer and Saves Lots of Water
Tata Teleservices Limited (TTSL), a telecom company in India, has launched a new service that allows farmers to operate their irrigation pumps remotely using a SMS-capable cellphone. This is extremely useful because the alternative often is for the farmers to walk many miles to the pumps, often at night because the electricity supply is a bit more reliable then (and sometimes after walking for hours, they arrive to find out that the electricity is out)."

  • Top 10 Most Popular Green Sites On Twitter &...

Rated Nov 23 5 reviews internet, website, green, twitter ecorazzi.com

From the page: In the last year, the number of websites hopping onto Twitter has exploded. For the green blogosphere in particular, we've discovered a new way to communicate not just green news and ideas â,” but also rally support for important legislation, causes, and initiatives. It's also become a more tight-knit group of greenies having conversations in 140 characters (or less), sharing news, and driving traffic.

For all the eco-related websites on Twitter, there are a few that are garnering massive follows. Sure, they're a fraction of what Ashton Kutcher or even Al Gore might command â,” but even numbers in the tens of thousands can benefit greatly.

In creating this list, I did my best to stack up all the green sites out there on Twitter against each other and rank according to followers. The majority are doing incredibly well in the 10,000 and below range â,” but these 10 represent those that have jumped beyond that number. I also did my best to concentrate on those sites with a heavy focus on green journalism â,” so even though Live Earth may have a blog, I consider it more of a green non-profit organization than a "green blog". Planet Green barely squeaked by because of their heavy focus on original green stories online.

From the page: "PERKASIE, Pennsylvania (Reuters) - Carin Froehlich pegs her laundry to three clotheslines strung between trees outside her 18th-century farmhouse, knowing that her actions annoy local officials who have asked her to stop.

Froehlich is among the growing number of people across America fighting for the right to dry their laundry outside against a rising tide of housing associations who oppose the practice despite its energy-saving green appeal.

Although there are no formal laws in this southeast Pennsylvania town against drying laundry outside, a town official called Froehlich to ask her to stop drying clothes in the sun. And she received two anonymous notes from neighbors saying they did not want to see her underwear flapping about."

  • Is San Francisco Dangerous for Pedestrians? : TreeHugger

From the page: "San Francisco is definitely pedestrian-friendly in many ways compared to many cities, but being walkable doesn't always mean that it is safe. A new report by Transportation for America ranks the San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont area 13th safest for walkers, based on an index that takes into account annual pedestrian deaths and the percentage of workers who commute by foot. Our friends at Streetsblog SF dug deeper and found that things are worse than they first seem: "47.7 percent of all traffic fatalities in San Francisco are pedestrians, more than four times the national average of 11.8 percent. The rate of pedestrian fatalities per 100,000 residents is 2.60 in San Francisco, 70 percent higher than the national average of 1.53.""

It's one of those ideas that crosses your mind while you're stuck in never-ending stop and go traffic on some ugly stretch of the highway: what if there were some sort of a sensor that could put all of those cars into lockstep? Some sort of automated driving system that would keep that SOB from cutting you off and wedging himself into your lane--something that would make the whole process more efficient, help control the traffic flow, and even let you take your hands off the wheel for long stretches of road.

Well, a test version of exactly that is underway in Europe--it's called the 'road train', and it could revolutionize highway driving.

From the page: "270 Million Tons of Plastics in 2007
Bioplastics are certainly not a panacea - they have their problems - but if we are to someday move to a world free of fossil fuels (by choice or by necessity), we'll need something to make plastics. Researchers from Utrecht University conducted a study that was commissioned by the associations European Bioplastics and the European Polysaccharide Network of Excellence (EPNOE), and their findings were pretty interesting."

Last year, guest posters from the World Business Council on Sustainable Development (WBCSD) wrote a post on TreeHugger about the creation of the Eco-Patent Commons. Today, that number has more than tripled with a 100 patents and new heavy-weight pledgers like Xerox, Dupont, Dow Chemical and Bosch."
