Hold on to your stomachs: This new, rather extreme climate change awareness ad from the grassroots organization Plane Stupid features polar bears plunging from the sky to their deaths. The message? Every average flight we take emits the weight of an adult polar bear in carbon dioxide. Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

From the page: "As many of you will be aware, a large number of emails from the University of East Anglia webmail server were hacked recently (Despite some confusion generated by Anthony Watts, this has absolutely nothing to do with the Hadley Centre which is a completely separate institution). As people are also no doubt aware the breaking into of computers and releasing private information is illegal, and regardless of how they were obtained, posting private correspondence without permission is unethical. We therefore arenâ€t going to post any of the emails here. We were made aware of the existence of this archive last Tuesday morning when the hackers attempted to upload it to RealClimate, and we notified CRU of their possible security breach later that day.

Nonetheless, these emails (a presumably careful selection of (possibly edited?) correspondence dating back to 1996 and as recently as Nov 12) are being widely circulated, and therefore require some comment. Some of them involve people here (and the archive includes the first RealClimate email we ever sent out to colleagues) and include discussions weâ€ve had with the CRU folk on topics related to the surface temperature record and some paleo-related issues, mainly to ensure that posting were accurate."

  • Greenbuild 2009: Al Gore's keynote address | MNN -...

After a long day walking the expo hall, meeting with green building product manufacturers, and sitting in on some fantastic sessions, I headed over to Chase Field to prepare for the Greenbuild 2009 Opening Celebration. After a great speech by U.S. Green Building Council CEO Rick Fedrizzi and representatives from green building councils across the world, Al Gore took the stage to present his keynote address.

Admittedly, I was a little starstruck. When Gore made his way to the stage I found that I was grinning. What followed was one of the most inspirational, and at times entertaining, keynote speeches I've ever heard. Once he introduced himself by saying "I am Al Gore, I used to be the next president of the United States" he had most of the audience hooked.

I will admit that one of my biggest pet peeves is when people quote facts (in tandem with either a physical or implied pointing finger) while lacking a solid grasp on what the numbers underlying their factoid actually mean.

As a numbers guy who has been crunching environmental impacts for years (5 of which were fueled by a vegetarian diet), this peeve applies particularly to environmentalists who have been working at cross purposes to the movement by creating the perception that sustainability is as a whole impossible for the average American. It tends to produce this result (my handy formula):

    (1 weak fact + 1 pointing finger) x # repetitions = anti-green sentiment (squared)

  • The Yes Men prank the U.S. Chamber of Commerce | MNN -...

    I love it!

From the page: "This is pure comic gold.

The Yes Men are activist geniuses. They can wrap a message around a prank like no one else can.

Today they pulled one over on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. They posed as the chamber and threw a press conference announcing their 180 flip on climate change and their intention to stop fighting the Boxer-Kerry climate change legislation working its way through the Senate.

In the middle of the presser, an actual chamber spokesman, tipped off by a confused reporter showing up at the real chamber offices for the announced press conference, burst into the room yelling and denouncing the Yes Men as impostors. There was a moment of reported hilarious insanity as the fake and real spokesmen got into a yelling match, each accusing the other of being phony. The real spokesman was able to stop the press conference but not before Reuters sent out a wire item reporting the policy about-face. Here's CNBC breaking the news:"

From the page: "The holding company owned by multi-billionaire Ronald Perelman is debating whether to leave the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Huffington Post has learned.

Driving the debate is the controversial stance taken by the country's biggest business lobby on climate change.

Executives at MacAndrews & Forbes Holdings, which owns significant stakes in a range of companies, most notably cosmetics maker Revlon, have been holding internal discussions on whether to pull out of the chamber over its recent challenge to the Clean Air Act. Should McAndrews & Forbes withdraw from the powerful business lobby, it would be the latest in a string of high-profile defections."

From the page: "Lack of private, clean and working toilets helps contribute to overpopulation in many developing countries.

The over population issue is a hard one for Environmentalists. On the one hand, we want to lower greenhouse gas emissions, but on the other hand, we advocate giving aid to third world countries. In a way, we are actively working to increase our global population, which then increases Global Warming through the support of the birth process. But there is a way to help girls in developing countries to stop having children, while giving aid to those that have already been born."

From the page: "This is another in a series of short articles on climate change, crafted specifically for congressmen and women and other policy makers that was designed to improve science literacy. No Congressman Left Behind started in April 2009 as a response to two congressmen associating CO2 with cancer and denying climate change using fake science. The U.S. National Atmospheric and Oceanographic Administration (NOAA), which is a U.S. government research office, provides unbiased measurements and interpretations of climatic data. NOAA will be our trusted independent, unbiased source for our two questions today's questions and answers. Last week's blog used NOAA data to answer the questions What is a greenhouse gas and is it affecting our climate?, and Are greenhouse gases increasing? Todays question is: Is the Earth's temperature increasing?"

From the page: "This is Pretty Big News
Carbon offsets are certainly controversial and not perfect, but despite their shortcomings they're still a good way to funnel money from the people who buy the products and services responsible for pollution to green projects like wind power, reforestation, methane capture, etc. The end result might not always be 100% "carbon neutral" as claimed, and if it is, it might not stay that way indefinitely, but a small step in the right direction is better than nothing. This is why I'm happy to learn that UPS has become the first small package carrier to offer CO2 offsets to its customers. And they're pretty inexpensive..."

  • Fidel Castro says Obama brave on global warming|...

From the page: "HAVANA (Reuters) - Former Cuban President Fidel Castro praised President Barack Obama on Wednesday for making a "brave gesture" by speaking out against global warming and saying developed nations had caused much of the damage.

But Castro added, in a column published in Cuba's state-run media, that Obama was part of a capitalist system that was "incompatible" with economic growth and a clean environment.

He was referring to Obama's speech at a U.N. summit on global warming on Tuesday in which the U.S. president warned that failure to act on climate change, said to be caused by the emission of greenhouse gases, could create a catastrophe.
