Dr Peter Watts, a PhD biologist and a hell of a science fiction writer, talks about what it means that a bunch of climate scientists

Science doesn't work despite scientists being asses. Science works, to at least some extent, because scientists are asses. Bickering and backstabbing are essential elements of the process. Haven't any of these guys ever heard of "peer review"?

There's this myth in wide circulation: rational, emotionless Vulcans in white coats, plumbing the secrets of the universe, their Scientific Methods unsullied by bias or emotionalism. Most people know it's a myth, of course; they subscribe to a more nuanced view in which scientists are as petty and vain and human as anyone (and as egotistical as any therapist or financier), people who use scientific methodology to tamp down their human imperfections and manage some approximation of objectivity.

But that's a myth too. The fact is, we are all humans; and humans come with dogma as standard equipment. We can no more shake off our biases than Liz Cheney could pay a compliment to Barack Obama. The best we can do-- the best science can do-- is make sure that at least, we get to choose among competing biases.

If climate regulation will burden businesses or increase costs, then why are so many companies strengthening their voluntary response to the climate crisis in the midst of an economic downturn?

The reason is, there's a race to the top when it comes to sustainability, particularly among consumer companies. No one wants to be seen as a laggard by customers, workers, NGOs, government or the press.

Reputation matters. Ignoring the climate emergency is no longer an option for a big consumer brand.

From the page: "As many of you will be aware, a large number of emails from the University of East Anglia webmail server were hacked recently (Despite some confusion generated by Anthony Watts, this has absolutely nothing to do with the Hadley Centre which is a completely separate institution). As people are also no doubt aware the breaking into of computers and releasing private information is illegal, and regardless of how they were obtained, posting private correspondence without permission is unethical. We therefore arenâ€t going to post any of the emails here. We were made aware of the existence of this archive last Tuesday morning when the hackers attempted to upload it to RealClimate, and we notified CRU of their possible security breach later that day.

Nonetheless, these emails (a presumably careful selection of (possibly edited?) correspondence dating back to 1996 and as recently as Nov 12) are being widely circulated, and therefore require some comment. Some of them involve people here (and the archive includes the first RealClimate email we ever sent out to colleagues) and include discussions weâ€ve had with the CRU folk on topics related to the surface temperature record and some paleo-related issues, mainly to ensure that posting were accurate."

Introducing Karl Rove 2.0 and his new post-propaganda 'astroturfing' industry. His tactic? Funnel oil money into fake grassroots organizations. His goal? Stop climate change legislation.

After a long day walking the expo hall, meeting with green building product manufacturers, and sitting in on some fantastic sessions, I headed over to Chase Field to prepare for the Greenbuild 2009 Opening Celebration. After a great speech by U.S. Green Building Council CEO Rick Fedrizzi and representatives from green building councils across the world, Al Gore took the stage to present his keynote address.

Admittedly, I was a little starstruck. When Gore made his way to the stage I found that I was grinning. What followed was one of the most inspirational, and at times entertaining, keynote speeches I've ever heard. Once he introduced himself by saying "I am Al Gore, I used to be the next president of the United States" he had most of the audience hooked.

From the page: "The clean energy bill slogging through the U.S. Congress is far weaker than whatâ€s needed. Thereâ€s every chance it will a) get weaker still and b) fail to pass in the end. These facts are widely acknowledged among progressives. Whatâ€s less agreed upon is who or what is to blame.

You see a lot of stuff like this post on OpenLeft (from Friends of the Earth) that casts the billâ€s weakness as a failure of will by progressive senators. Whatâ€s needed is for some senate â€oechampions” to â€oestand up for a stronger bill.” Similarly, many folks have traced the billâ€s failures back to Obama, saying heâ€s been distracted by health care and insufficiently engaged. The idea seems to be that the bill would be better if only those damn Democrats would try harder.

But the lack of vocal Democratic champions for a stronger bill is more effect than cause. The root of Americaâ€s political dysfunction lies elsewhere, and deserves far more attention, not only from leftie activists but from Democrats themselves and the mainstream press."

I will admit that one of my biggest pet peeves is when people quote facts (in tandem with either a physical or implied pointing finger) while lacking a solid grasp on what the numbers underlying their factoid actually mean.

As a numbers guy who has been crunching environmental impacts for years (5 of which were fueled by a vegetarian diet), this peeve applies particularly to environmentalists who have been working at cross purposes to the movement by creating the perception that sustainability is as a whole impossible for the average American. It tends to produce this result (my handy formula):

    (1 weak fact + 1 pointing finger) x # repetitions = anti-green sentiment (squared)

From the page: "NASA, and the world, have a problem. Itâ€s ICESAT-I (Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite) which provides critical data on rapidly changing ice volume and thickness, is going to go offline this year.

The launch of its replacement, the ICESat-II, isnâ€t scheduled until 2014-15. This creates a large data gap in laser observations of the Arctic changes. How is NASA going to cover the gap? Introducing â€oeOperation Ice Bridge.”

The Ice Bridge flights will help scientists maintain the record of changes to sea ice and ice sheets that have been collected since 2003 by ICESat. The flights will lack the continent-wide coverage that can be achieved by satellite, so researchers carefully select key target locations. But the flights will also turn up new information not possible from orbit, such as the shape of the terrain below the ice."

From the page: "LONDON (Reuters) - The public needs to be convinced about the threat of climate change so governments are under pressure to adopt strong policies and extend a U.N. pact to fight climate change in Copenhagen this December, experts say.

Persuading the public that the long-term effects of climate change could be averted by action now should be a top priority, psychology experts said at a climate change psychology conference in London this week.

Just two more high-level meetings of ministers from over 190 countries are scheduled before a climate summit in Copenhagen on December 7-18, and they are still haggling over a new deal."
