The more adventurous types are living on their boats these days -- for economical reasons or just wanderlust.

Well, Duh! We shoppers are continually being analyzed by the merchants, and I thought the economists were already doing that, too. This article is pointing out that they are specifically targeting eBay's auction -- to see what their customers/buyers do. I was neutral as far as the subject goes, but had to "thumbs up" to get it on the page.
All in all, there is a lot of extreme marketing going on. I'm not against marketing, but ads in the toilet, come on! We need an economy, but they're trying to turn it into a science (Okay, it pretty much already is a science called Marketing Research.) where the big time players can know our every mood, more so, than we know ourselves. Now, that's getting quite invasive. I have "bones to pick" with SU and eBay, but they're one and the same, now, aren't they?
