I enjoy Reading, Computers, Programming (although I am not very good) Video games, Zoology, and Physics.(Science is pretty much my life) Bizarre, dry or surrealist humor is the best. I love meeting new people, I hate it when people don't like each other for stupid reasons. I tend to ramble. I can't kill mosquitoes because I feel guilty afterwords. In my opinion outer space is the place to be. I am an atheist, as well as a liberal. But before any of that I am a humanist. Whenever I write with pens I get ink all over my hands. I usually spend at least three hours a day buried in a good book. I'm a huge introvert, and am incredibly shy. Overall I'm a pretty huge nerd. I battle depression but usually come out the winner.I'm not the smartest person in the world, but I love to learn. Message me, I will probably like you. Plus I live to talk to interesting people.

A lot of the culture in the west revolved around the whole concept of individual choice. You are the only one responsible for your own fate, you are the only one to blame for your crimes, etc etc etc.

Yet a bazillion studies done in the field of psychology show that an individual doesn't act only based on their own soul or mind or viewpoints. A huge amount of our decisions are based around our environments rather than anything special about ourselves.

For instance,The Milgram Experiment was an experiment a bit too complicated for me to explain in text, but it tried to understand how people like the Nazis could do such awful things purely based on orders. The experiment sadly proved that people WOULD do just about anything to another person if an authority figure asked them to.

Supporting that is the Stamford Prison Experiment, which turned a group of kids into mindless zombies and ruthless oppressors.

Both of these experiments show that in the right conditions, a man can either be a monster or a hero. His own personal inclinations don't matter all that much.

(Also if this all interests you, I would highly suggest looking into this episode of radiolab, a radio show exploring the more interesting parts of the human experience.)

So, when I read something like this report I immediately get a sense of impending doom. I have no control over my life! No matter what I do, my environment will eventually decide my fate! People aren't good, situations are!

But! ButButButButBut! This isn't quite true!
A lot of these studies rely quite heavily on the fact that the people were unaware of the fact that they were being tested. If you can hold these experiments in your mind, you can keep on being a hero even when the situation starts turning you into a villain.

Phillip Zimbardo (The man who created the prison experiment) gave a beautiful explanation to this at the end of his TED lecture on heroism.

So basically, at the end of all this chatter. I'm trying to say that these statistics, they do show that some situations will bring out the worst in people. If a place is dingier then more people are going to steal from it. But if you can always remember to keep an eye on yourself, and really think out your decisions, then you can begin to change statistics. We can all be everyday heroes.

haha oh wow, someone who reviewed this before me tried to criticize the people who thumbed up this video. He said that atheists were silly for fighting so hard for their "side". Not sure if he took into account how angry and spiteful the newscasters themselves were.

I'm not sure if people understand how much hate there is towards atheists. We are more hated by the public than Gays, Muslims, Jews, or any minority group. People would be more willing to have a Gay president than an atheist one.

Plus.. Watch that video. How is this even aired on TV? Imagine the newscasters saying this about Jewish people. They would be booted off the air. Atheist bashing is A-OK though apparently.

It can be scary to turn on the TV and see people having spite towards something so personal. I thought we might have gotten over this but apparently not.
