While I applaud Porsche's technological prowess, and I love it that many of the modern manufacturers are finding ways to bring fuel efficiency up without compromising speed or power, I still cannot help to feel just a bit wistful. Unfortunately, the traditional manual shift transmission is slowly going the way of the dinosaur. Soon we "shifters" will be even a more elite group (I read somewhere that only 5% of the population currently knows how to drive a manual transmission... I am not sure of the accuracy of that number, but one way or another it is way too small). I guess that will be our generation's story to our grandchildren. Our grandparents told us about how they walked to school barefoot in the snow, uphill both ways! And, they were happy to be there! We will tell our grandkids, "When I learned to drive, we had a third pedal, called a clutch that we had to push in to change gears and try not to stall the car, most cars didn't have cruise control, and we *even* had to park ourselves!!! And, we were happy to do it!!"...
Regardless, Porsche's PDK (trust me, don't ask what that stands for) is a brilliant bit of engineering. And John has done an excellent job (as he always does) making me wish that I had one in my driveway!
