...They miss the whisper that runs any day in your mind, "Who are you really, wanderer?" and the answer you have to give no matter how dark and cold the world around you is: "Maybe I'm a king." --William Stafford

Desire nothing except desirelessness...hope for nothing except to rise above all hopes...want nothing and you will have everything... --Avatar Meher Baba

"Remember; no matter where you go, there you are." --Buckaroo Banzai

(upon viewing a television video of a recorded dream in "Until the End of the World"): Claire: "This is so beautiful." Henry: "Wallpaper is beautiful. You're looking at the human soul singing to itself. To its own god."

Alright, go easy on this... It's not done yet. I'm going to redo the vocals and add some percussion and fade it out after the vocals are done (but I had fun doing that 2+ minute keyboard solo at the end), but I've gotten enough favorable feedback on this rough mix to share it here with all you folks. The lyrics came from a blog entry from everybody's friend Elledark (used with complete permission, of course). I really liked this Poem of hers and it inspired me to start working on this little production over the winter holiday season when I had some spare time. The words really resonated with me, right up my alley (as anyone who knows me would agree), and although I did a 5 year stint as a professional studio engineer, music production is more of a hobby of mine now as I have a small analog home recording studio (screw pro-tools! this already sounds better than most amateur stuff that comes out of pro-tools and I'm not done yet!). Working on stuff like this is very therapeutic for me and I'm continuing to enjoy working on this one, thanks Elle!

    The Patriot

I remember the time, back in '53
people say we went too far
we brought down the government of Iran
    replaced it with the Shah
he was our puppet and innocent blood
    was spilled upon their soil
you say it was wrong, but we had to do it
    to control the Iranian oil

    and we wrapped ourselves
    in the stars and stripes
    so no-one dare ask why

    I remember Guatamala in '54
    when democracy had to go
We took down Arbenz and his 'help the poor'
    our paymasters wanted more

we found a dictator and trained the torturers
    to stamp out the opposition
the crime was so big no-one would question
    patriotic men in my position

    and we wrapped ourselves
    in the stars and stripes
    so no-one dare ask why

    I remember Berlin in '89
    the day the cold-war died
they said the 'red menace' died that day too
and you knew we had lied
but fear is required if we are to control you
    so we needed a solution
new myths were created, war will be endless
    we ignore the constitution

    and we wrap ourselves
    in the stars and stripes
    so no-one dare ask why

I remember it all, so many things
    that haunt me sometimes now
    newsreel images from foreign countries
    and nobody understands how
How honorable men like we are
can deal in lies and blood
please understand that I am a patriot
I do it for our country's good

    and we wrap ourselves
    in the stars and stripes
    so no-one dare ask why
