Paralell Worlds, Paralell Lives. This NOVA special follows the journey of Eels frontman Mark Everett as he goes in search of knowledge pertaining to his deceased father's amazing scientific theory. His father, Hugh Everett III, was the man who originally proposed the many worlds interpretation (MWI) of quantum physics, or the concept of paralell universes.
"If you do crack or heroin just once you'll be automatically hooked..." Are people really inclined to believe something this stupid?
Crack and heroin are just like any other substance that a person can put into their bodies. It enters your system, and after awhile, it leaves again. There's no "permanent effect." And whether or not a person decides to continue using the substance is entirely up to them. I mean, they certainly are addictive substances but it's totally illogical to think that doing something once will automatically make you a slave to it forever. That type of thinking is purely a product of "drug war" hysteria and propaganda.
Oh, aren't they so sweet together? It makes me get all misty eyed. (The adorable couple is Shell & yetikeeper a week after they were married on Oct. 18th of last year.)
"In recent months, conservatives have sounded increasingly retro with their attempts to paint Obama as a socialist or communist. In some ways, this accusation is typical far-right boilerplate. Obama certainly isn't the first Democrat running for president to be accused of communist sympathies. And as usual, the accusations are rarely linked to policy specifics. But the difference with Obama is that, in the eyes of the right, it's not just his political affiliation that implicates him as a socialist. It's his ethnic background.
The hysterical accusations of socialism from conservatives echo similar accusations leveled at black leaders in the past, as though the quest for racial parity were simply a left-wing plot. Obama may not actually be a socialist or communist, but his election would strike another powerful blow to the informal racial hierarchy that has existed in America since the 1960s, when it ceased being enforced by law. This hierarchy, which holds that whiteness is synonymous with American-ness,is one conservatives are now instinctively trying to preserve. Like black civil-rights activists of the 1960s, Obama symbolizes the destruction of a social order they see as fundamentally American, which is why terms like "socialism" are used to describe the threat."
I think that the general thrust of this argument may be on to something...
Frank Schaeffer, a lifelong Republican, writes an open letter to John McCain calling attention to the potential dangers of his campaign's most recent smear tactics.
"Senator John McCain: If your campaign does not stop equating Sen. Barack Obama with terrorism, questioning his patriotism and portraying Mr. Obama as "not one of us," I accuse you of deliberately feeding the most unhinged elements of our society the red meat of hate, and therefore of potentially instigating violence.
John McCain, you're walking a perilous line. If you do not stand up for all that is good in America and declare that Senator Obama is a patriot, fit for office, and denounce your hate-filled supporters when they scream out "Terrorist" or "Kill him," history will hold you responsible for all that follows.
John McCain and Sarah Palin, you are playing with fire, and you know it. You are unleashing the monster of American hatred and prejudice, to the peril of all of us. You are doing this in wartime. You are doing this as our economy collapses. You are doing this in a country with a history of assassinations.
Change the atmosphere of your campaign. Talk about the issues at hand. Make your case. But stop stirring up the lunatic fringe of haters, or risk suffering the judgment of history and the loathing of the American people - forever.
