As the HP.com Chief Architect, I get a chance to work with a lot of different people from all over the world. Over my 14 years at HP, I noticed a trend: the difference between a good engineer and a great one had little to do with technical prowess and a lot to do with all the other aspects of work that most engineers would rather not talk about. Things like accurately estimating the duration of tasks so that reliable schedules can be created or explaining highly technical concepts in terms that can be understood by upper management. It is in our nature as engineers to want to curl up in our cubicles and solve problems in isolation all day, but those who master these other key skills are the ones that get ahead and earn rewards. These are the kinds of topics I write about on nerdguru.net, my personal blog, twice a week.
