A parody expressing the present state of community mental health in Maryland, from a consumers view. "We envision a future when everyone with a mental illness will recover, a future when mental illnesses can be prevented or cured, a future when mental illnesses are detected early, and a future when everyone with a mental illness at any stage of life has access to effective treatment and supports -- essentials for living, working, learning, and participating fully in the community. More individuals could recover from even the most serious mental illnesses if they had access in their communities to treatment and supports that are tailored to their needs." - President's New Freedom Commission on Mental Health

The Demise of Community Mental Health in Maryland? ...
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Community Mental Health Centers (CMHCs) are disappearing throughout the state. The few remaining centers are threatened with collapse. CMHCs in many counties have closed their doors due to altered reimbursement systems initiated by the Mental Hygiene Administration (MHA). Their staffs and patients are scattered. In many cases no one knows what has become of patients.

What Would It Really Take To Make Things Right?

There's not much political benefit to pushing the cause of people with mental disorders, and over the past 30 years governments have done little to fulfill a promise made by President John F. Kennedy in 1963 to subsidize mental-health services in every community.

Instead, communities have hired a lot of police, and today cops are the primary care givers for most of the unemployed mentally ill. That's because 200,000 of them are homeless, according to the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, an advocacy group. Another 200,000 are incarcerated, usually as a result of petty crimes. Fewer than 70,000, on the other hand, live in state mental hospitals. And according to a study by Maryland researchers, less than 10% of Americans with schizophrenia are treated in the smaller community programs envisioned by Kennedy-era reformers.

However, many will turn first to clergy or a faith-based agency.

Although the movement to fund faith-based agencies with federal monies raises concerns about eroding the constitutional separation of church and state, faith-based agencies serve a significant part of the population. Churches, synagogues, and mosques serve as surrogate families and community centers for millions of people. Religious writings and spiritual practices bring solace, support, sharing, practical wisdom, and guidance for dealing with myriad challenges, relationships, transitions, and losses. People with incipient mental illness may trust religious organizations far more than community health services.

"If you have a few hundred followers, and you let some of them molest children, they call you a cult leader. If you have a billion, they call you 'Pope.' It's like, if you can't pay your mortgage, you're a deadbeat. But if you can't pay a million mortgages, you're Bear Stearns and we bail you out. And that is who the Catholic Church is: the Bear Stearns of organized pedophilia -- too big, too fat." -Bill Maher

"And that's the Church's attitude: 'We're here, we're queer, get used to it,' which is fine, far be it from me to criticize religion. But just remember one thing: If the Pope was -- instead of a religious figure -- merely the CEO of a nationwide chain of day care centers, where thousands of employees had been caught molesting kids and then covering it up, he'd be arrested faster than you can say 'who wants to touch Mr. Wiggle?'" -Bill Maher

Pay offered to me:
15 Hours/Week times 4 = 60
$250 divided by 60 = $4.16 and Hour

Horrors that the state or county couldn't
find its way clear to at least pay folks minimum wage.
But the retarded, those in jail and the mentally ill aren't human.

Just my opinion, what with stigma, social anxiety, up and down days.
But big creative loving hearts that give what they can, live in squalor.

Driving experience:

16 Miles one way 32 round trip.
16 Miles per Gallon at 3.50 gallon $7.00 dollars a Day

3 Days a week $21.00 or $84.00 a Month
4 Days a week $28.00 or (Saturday) $112.00 a Month
=============================================================================
$250.00 a Month promised minus $84.00 is $166.00/Month or $41.00/week
$250.00 a Month promised minus $112.00 is $138.00/Month or $34.50/week

Its really insulting to be offered this much one day, then 7 days later told, no that was meant to be later on, now we retract it because of insurance or some such thing.

Ray, Thanks again!

I appreciate the work you completed yesterday. We have been given an
increase in our award for FY 2009. So, if you can put in around 15 hours per week at OOOPGC, I'd pay you as a volunteer - around $250.00 per month as it now stands. It isn't much, but I must compensate you for your
time and efforts.

I hope to see you soon.

States are at different stages in their capabilities to support individuals in the community. Many face major challenges in marshaling the resources necessary to meet the needs of working-age adults with serious mental illnesses in the community. This is why the funding of mental health services is a major issue nationwide and why the Medicaid program is increasingly important.

For Want of a Dentist (Uninsured boy dies of toothache in DC)
Some poor have no dental coverage at all. Others travel three hours to find a dentist willing to take Medicaid patients and accept the incumbent paperwork. And some, including Deamonte's brother, get in for a tooth cleaning but have trouble securing an oral surgeon to fix deeper problems. In spite of efforts to change the system, fewer than one in three children in Maryland's Medicaid program received any dental service at all in 2005,
