Tony is a 23 year old guy from Waterloo, Ontario, Canada

I'm a University of Waterloo student, trying to switch into Computer Science. Instead, in an odd twist of irony, I'm currently working as a Software Developer for an amazing web startup company in Toronto. In between this school-work drama, I also manage to operate a community forum, administer a monthly computer programming contest, and regularly publish articles on my blog.

There is this perception that a typical programming job involves being locked away in a grey cubicle at some LargeCorp Inc., buried in mediocre tasks, and rarely seeing the light of day. While this grim illustration is not exactly the case, there is some motive to such stereotype.

So we'll be going on an adventure through on-site programming positions that are anything but typical.

We could explicitly exchange digital keys that would represent music licenses purchased by individuals, to fit the p2p online music sharing into the current copyright framework. Though if that, on a large enough scale, will be similar enough to a free-for-all exchange, why put on such a legal circus?

It's a crazy idea that just might work. One way to reduce piracy of video games is to not cripple the games with DRM.

Actually that's not just the video games. DRM hurts legitimate customers in just about every application. It's time for developers of content to start a discussion and listen to their customers; though the corporate world will likely just cripple their own content some more, and not understand why they are wrong.

Looks like it's the indie scene that would have to bootstrap the movement.

An amazing look into the world of illegal e-waste trade; dumping of obsolete electronics onto the poor nations of Africa where the children are desperate enough to drive themselves into what amounts to slave labour, and mine for precious metals in a toxic and hazardous environment.

Though it seems that the developed world is not even noticing the situation; at least until their confidential data from disposed hard-drives turns up in the hands on interested parties.

This is scary stuff, but I am fascinated by digital hacks that have a physical world impact.

The digital security of medical devises is an interesting subject, and will only get more so as the growing field of bio-informatics puts more tech into and around patients.

I suppose pacemakers are already the ultimate hack -- it's a remote-control access to a tiny "taser" inside someone, with easily fatal consequences.

It seems that a certain company is not happy with a critical review of their software, from two years ago, so they are trying to dig up a bunch of legal construct to censor the review and take down a proof-of-concept application that explains a security flaw (in their older software).

Oh, but their were told about the security issue well in advance; the publication was made only because they chose not to fix the flaw at the time.

They claim to have done so now.

Any advice will be appreciated.
