The largest pieces of cloth in the world created from silk extracted from spiders is to go on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

An elaborately embroidered cape and a 4m (13ft) long scarf were both spun from the silk of more than a million spiders.

  • BBC News - Arctic Ocean freshwater bulge detected

Rated Jan 23 3 reviews science, weather, arctic, climate, trends bbc.co.uk

UK scientists have detected a huge dome of freshwater that is developing in the western Arctic Ocean.

The bulge is some 8,000 cubic km in size and has risen by about 15cm since 2002.

The team thinks it may be the result of strong winds whipping up a great clockwise current in the northern polar region called the Beaufort Gyre.

This would force the water together, raising sea surface height, the group tells the journal Nature Geoscience.

"In the western Arctic, the Beaufort Gyre is driven by a permanent anti-cyclonic wind circulation. It drives the water, forcing it to pile up in the centre of gyre, and this domes the sea surface," explained lead author Dr Katharine Giles from the Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling (CPOM) at University College London.

Astronomers have spotted a "dwarf" galaxy some 10 billion light-years away which may be made mostly of the mysterious material called dark matter.

The dwarf was found using a technique called gravitational lensing. It is only the second dark dwarf ever seen, and it is by far the most distant.

The fact that so few dwarf galaxies are seen in our own cosmic neighbourhood has remained a conundrum in astronomy.

The study in Nature could explain it: they may be overwhelmingly dark matter.

Dwarf galaxies often occur in the periphery of larger galaxies, where they are known as satellites - the Milky Way may have many as well.

As silent movie The Artist tap-dances its way through awards season, we look back at the first movie to win the Academy Award for best picture, 1927\'s silent epic Wings.

As movie historians will tell you, Wings wasn\'t just the first film to win a best picture Oscar; it is also the only silent film to achieve that accolade.

By the time Wings took the top prize at the inaugural Oscar ceremony at Hollywood\'s Roosevelt Hotel in 1929, the advent of \"talkies\" was already sweeping the silent era aside.

Such a hippie. I know. But, if you hate spending cash for deodorant that is filled with synthetics, aluminum (or is “all natural” and does not work), and comes in disproportionate amounts of plastic packaging, read on!

I’ve been making and using this for a year and it’s incredible. It works better than regular deodorant, in my experience, even during extreme activity and stress, like an ambulance call. And it’s so easy to make.

I use a slight variation of Angry Chicken’s recipe. I have followed her recipe precisely and it’s fantastic but somewhat soft and needs to be applied with the fingertips. No biggie, but using a stick is faster and easier. My ratio alterations are noted below, and I use jojoba oil instead of Vitamin E oil because it’s what I have around.

  • Facebook's Buggiest Page Was Created on Purpose

    Rated Jan 14 1 review internet mashable.com

Lithuanian video artist Laimonas Zakas, who enjoys web production as a hobby, created a Facebook Page called Glitchr that messes with Facebook codes. The art project has garnered more than 12,657 likes so far.

Don’t be afraid to visit the harmless Facebook Page. It just takes your chat navigation line and causes it to appear in the sprawling line down your screen. Voila, art.

Zakas was inspired to start this project in May when he received a Facebook notification in a blue bubble instead of the standard red one. The coding only took a couple of hours.
