    Our search to understand what it means to be conscious, the meaning of life, etc. is based on this same principle. The idea is that the more accurate our internal model of ourselves and reality, the better choices we will make. Our brains are aware that often we make choices that end up bad, and the reason for this was simply a flawed internal model of either ourselves, of people around us, or other aspects of reality. The only way to correct that is to have a more accurate model. This is what drives the desire for education. When you seek to understand yourself, the universe, etc - you are experiencing the process of your brain modifying these internal models in order to result in more accurate outcomes to behavior.
