I'm a graduate candidate at the University of Southern Denmark's Center for American Studies. My main academic interests include; intellectual history, critical social theory, postmodern cultural studies, and visual semiotics, especially within the public/political theater. I'm originally from a mid-size town (large city by Danish standards) along the Gulf Coast but have been "transatlanticized" for more than 10 years. I hang out all over the internets and write for a few blogs. In the analogue universe I'm usually found, with son in tow, bicycling around Northeastern Fyn. For my uninitiated American friends, I don't "cycle." I just like to ride my bicycle(s) around, especially the 1954 Schwinn Corvette Cruiser. You know, like when we were kids. Theses days, when I'm not writing my thesis or "making a living", I'm "working" our organic vegetable patch at our little kolonihave (colony garden), doing my little part to both save the planet and my sanity.

What I find interesting (and important) about this mini-series is how it can be seen within a Gramscian framework of a cultural war for position. Slowly, progressive values are chipping away at the current reactionary hegemonic power. It's not just about "teaching" kids environmentalism but shifting the cultural mindset. They're also really very cleaver and well done.

It is the elderly Manson who fuels the imagination of icon workers that use him in a politicized discourse, as witnessed first by a right wing manipulation of Manson's image, photo-shopped into a photo of former Democrat candidate for President, John Kerry, who was the victim of a vicious slander campaign due to his past as an anti-Vietnam War activist.
