Personal philosophy:
1) Always consider the precedent.
2) You never know what other people are thinking (until you ask).
3) It's well and good to flirt with danger -- just keep in mind that one day you could end up getting *ed. |

Dec 14, 2008 6:31pm (1 review) astronomy, meteor, auckland http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badast...- Great blog about the NZ Herald turkey story that actually surmised in print that the Ponsonby fire on Saturday night was caused by the crazy meteor that passed overhead. It was a fun theory, especially when it was happening, but actually going on the record with that thought was a bit mad!
Although, I can only be jealous of all of the traffic it would have sent them!!
Witnessing that meteor was one of the best things I've ever seen. I've seen the classic shooting stars before, on the horizon, but I have ever, ever, had something that passed *directly overhead*, like an aircraft passing over, and was so incredibly close. You could actually hear it. And the trail it left behind stayed illuminated for several minutes. I would love to know how close it was! That crazy flash of light as well. All this witnessed from the top of a volcano, one of the best vantage points in the city.
It was truly an otherworldly experience.
The blaze following shortly thereafter just was craziness. I'm wondering what is going to happen during the next full moon!

Sitting in the departure lounge now and from the smoke you can tell that the fires are far from out.
