Evolving mind, heart in ascension. One less "god" than the monotheists have. Music and literature to me like freshly ground coffee and organic milk. Odd. Shy. Compulsively talkative. Poly in love, monogamous with my partner. Friends with Eros and Psyche. I was diagnosed as a puer ęternus, but I'm all grown up. That's me in the Hunter S. Anarchism and Other Essays: Anarchism: What It Really Stands For
Jul 4, 10:03am    (1 review)  anarchism, politics, government, society  http://sunsite3.berkeley.edu/Goldman/Wri...
"A thorough perusal of the history of human development will disclose two elements in bitter conflict with each other; elements that are only now beginning to be understood, not as foreign to each other, but as closely related and truly harmonious, if only placed in proper environment: the individual and social instincts. The individual and society have waged a relentless and bloody battle for ages, each striving for supremacy, because each was blind to the value and importance of the other. The individual and social instincts,--the one a most potent factor for individual endeavor, for growth, aspiration, self-realization; the other an equally potent factor for mutual helpfulness and social well-being.

"The explanation of the storm raging within the individual, and between him and his surroundings, is not far to seek. The primitive man, unable to understand his being, much less the unity of all life, felt himself absolutely dependent on blind, hidden forces ever ready to mock and taunt him. Out of that attitude grew the religious concepts of man as a mere speck of dust dependent on superior powers on high, who can only be appeased by complete surrender. All the early sagas rest on that idea, which continues to be the Leitmotiv of the biblical tales dealing with the relation of man to God, to the State, to society. Again and again the same motif, man is nothing, the powers are everything. Thus Jehovah would only endure man on condition of complete surrender. Man can have all the glories of the earth, but he must not become conscious of himself. The State, society, and moral laws all sing the same refrain: Man can have all the glories of the earth, but he must not become conscious of himself.

"Anarchism is the only philosophy which brings to man the consciousness of himself; which maintains that God, the State, and society are non-existent, that their promises are null and void, since they can be fulfilled only through man's subordination. Anarchism is therefore the teacher of the unity of life; not merely in nature, but in man. There is no conflict between the individual and the social instincts, any more than there is between the heart and the lungs: the one the receptacle of a precious life essence, the other the repository of the element that keeps the essence pure and strong. The individual is the heart of society, conserving the essence of social life; society is the lungs which are distributing the element to keep the life essence--that is, the individual--pure and strong."

Reiki Is Nonsense
Jun 13, 4:37pm    (1 review)  health, quackery, skeptic, reiki  http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRela...
As you might have already guessed: "Reiki has no substantiated health value and lacks a scientifically plausible rationale. Science-based healthcare settings should not tolerate its use, and scarce government research dollars should not be used to study it further." But do go read the rest!
Michelle Obamas plea for education : Greg Ladens Blog

"Speaking at a London girls' school, Michelle Obama makes a passionate, personal case for each student to take education seriously. It is this new, brilliant generation, she says, that will close the gap between the world as it is and the world as it should be."
MIT Group Increases Global Warming Projections - Capital Weather Gang
May 25, 7:44pm    (1 review)  science, climate-science, global-warming, agw-projections, climatology  http://voices.washingtonpost.com/capital...
"New research from MIT scientists shows that in the absence of stringent reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, 21st century climate change may be far more significant than some previous climate assessments had indicated.

"...The modeling experiments are not meant to provide precise forecasts of future temperature changes, but rather to serve as what one related MIT study calls 'thought experiments' to help policymakers and the public understand how decisions regarding emissions reductions may affect the magnitude of climate change. They show how human activities are loading the dice in favor of a warming climate, and cast doubt on the feasibility of limiting temperature increases to the lower range of what the influential U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change projected in its most recent assessment report in 2007."
Probability Problems : CJR
May 25, 7:36pm    (1 review)  science, global-warming, climate-change, climatology, agw  http://www.cjr.org/the_observatory/proba...
"A study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change, which found that end-of-the-century global warming could be twice as severe as previous estimates, drew a limited amount of press attention on Thursday. Few of the resulting articles, unfortunately, are totally satisfying."

[Read the original MIT article here.]

This is a needed critique of the generally faulty media coverage the MIT piece received. The average reader must not be misled or shortchanged by shoddy reporting, especially in the case where the issue that the findings relate to (global warming) is being assailed by unscrupulous critics who feel free to take advantage of the ignorance of the general public.

I encourage you to read both pieces.

"Urban Journal: tips & tricks for staying safe in the big city"

This is going to be a tremendously useful blog/forum. Here's the intro:

"Welcome to Urban Journal! A little bit of an introduction is in order before we get started. My name is Jason DeFillippo and my co-editor is Sean Bonner. We're a couple of city dwelling guys who have a passion for all things related to preparedness and survivalism in urban settings. We both live in the greater Los Angeles area which is home to a plague of possible disasters from riots to earthquakes to tsunamis and the list goes on. So with an eye to things going sideways we're starting this site to share our knowledge and experiences as we go. We're not claiming to be survival experts. We have a deep passion for this stuff and we're meeting more and more people every day who share it. Learning how to be ready in case something happens that's out of our control is becoming more and more important as more people are living in cities and as we lose more of the core skills it takes to get by and our reliance on the infrastructure of civilization increases. With that in mind we are also launching a forum where we can all discuss various tips and techniques and learn from each other and build a community of like minded people."

Yeah, I'll be keeping this one bookmarked. Just had a quake in Inglewood minutes ago (which prompted Xeni Jardin to tweet this sweet link a day early).

"There's nothing fictional about antimatter. It's all around us, all the time, raining down in debris when cosmic rays hit the atmosphere, or used in medical procedures like PET scans, which make images when positrons (anti-electrons) from a radioactive tracer annihilate with ordinary electrons."

Very cool and informative article! File this under "Learn something new every day".
Kaleidoscope Visions Photo Gallery by Al Teich at pbase.com

Amazing photography of kaleidoscope images! Check it:

"Teich's arresting photographs depict black and white beads floating in oil inside a 1.5 cm thick Lucite puck. Taken through the eyepiece of a kaleidoscope, the black and white prints display seven-fold symmetry.

"Seven-fold symmetry is 'an unusual form requiring an extremely precise alignment of mirrors,' Teich explained.

"Teich, who holds a B.A. in physics and a Ph.D. in political science from MIT, sees a natural harmony between art and science."
What Wiped Out The Dinosaurs? : Starts With A Bang
Apr 28, 5:48pm    (1 review)  science, extinction, geology, dinosaurs, dinosaur-extinction  http://scienceblogs.com/startswithabang/...
"For over 100 million years, dinosaurs, and not mammals, were the dominant form of life on Earth. The pinnacle of evolution at the time, dinosaurs filled the niches of being the largest, most differentiated animals -- herbivores and carnivores both -- on the planet. As you well know from seeing their fossils, they would dwarf their modern, mammalian counterparts if they were still alive today."

.

This is a great, simple, straightforward account of how it is we think the dinosaurs went extinct. It recounts the evidence and tells the story as we've been able to piece it together. It's a fun read, too!
