Mostly fun. About a year or so ago, being stuck at home with some nasty back problems (doing much better, thanks!!) I was looking for stuff to keep me busy. I wandered the virtual hallways at YouTube and found an awesome how-to video demonstrating the making of a greeting card. I thought it'd be awesome to pull out my old craft stuff and do some again. The inspiring craft guru was Kristina Werner. Between her YouTube posts and her blog I've found tons of inspiration. Much of it was in the form (indirectly) of lessons about color combination, pattern repetition, textures, balance and more. While she doesn't specifically say "this is what makes a balanced card" it's quite easy to see from the way she works that design elements work best in certain ways and combinations. Her videos make it easy for the viewer to use the information she gives as a platform from which to leap into their own original work rather than merely copying what she's done.

There are quite a few people making do-it-yourself videos and posting them to YouTube. It's such a wonderful thing when people are so willing to share their talents, abilities and knowledge.
