"Every state did not have to join the Union. Originally only nine states joined. The others came later," says Rand, adding that the states could just as well have walked away.
Rand also points out that secessionist talk is not only about the Civil War, but has been ongoing in various states throughout U.S. history. For example, New England threatened secession over the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, and discussed it again during the War of 1812 at the Hartford Convention.

Also, this is not a new idea. It has been on a lot of people's minds for quite some time! I think the idea is gaining more awareness and consideration because it is disgustingly obvious that we do not live in the same United States that The Founding Fathers intended. What would I know though? I am Southern, Libertarian, and I have ancestors who fought in both the Revolutionary War (you know...the one where we fought against England for our Independence?) and The Civil War. Maybe I'm just biased.
Xzizor, have you ever read the Declaration of Independence? Perhaps you should. Here are the first two paragraphs to get you started:
"When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

Amide-If the northeast *is* the United States, what about the states that were part of the 13 Colonies that were not in the northeast? My family settled in eastern NC,SC and some in VA in the 1600's and many fought in the War for Independence. Jamestown, VA was the first English colony in the US (Not in a northeastern state)
