The perils of socialised medicine?

Time, I think, for two examples from me about Britain's NHS.
I have a close friend who has epilepsy and has been an insulin-dependent diabetic since childhood. He also has other health-related problems including glaucoma and osteoporosis. So as you can imagine he needs a large battery of medications and is what the NHS calls a 'frequent flyer' because he has frequent in- and out-patient admissions each year.
The cost of his treatment? Nothing.
The mother of a friend of mine was diagnosed in early 2009 with a uterine tumour. It was removed and she is now back on her feet and even helping out her son-in-law by shopping for him when he had flu. Two years ago she had knee-joint replacement operations in both legs.
How old is she? 92, yes NINETY-TWO years old.
How much did all this treatment cost? Nothing.
