Mark is a 25 year old guy from New York, New York, USA
I'm a law student with dreams of astrophysics. I believe that nothing can compare to the elegance of science; though poetry, art, and song can transcend the human experience, science is the melody the reverberates through the greatest of stars to the most infinitesimal of thoughts. Carl Sagan said it better than it will ever be said again, "we are star stuff contemplating star stuff." Our bodies, our minds are made of the same cosmic matter that forms each of the stars in the Starry Night. We are the universe looking back at itself, and it is beautiful.

I'm not sure how to feel about this. Surely this is justice at it's most basic, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth; but I do not know if this makes for a civilized society. I feel for this woman, and I cannot even begin to fathom what she is going through now and what she went through living in a society where blinding women who reject you is relatively common place. Perhaps this kind of deterrence is needed, if for no other reason than to remind Iranian men of the severity of this crime.
I am reminded of stories about India where men feel free to harass and grope women on the street. Where a beautiful woman has no choice but to cover herself to avoid the unwanted attention that can lead to rape. Or Saudi Arabian "honor killings" of young women for having the audacity to kiss the man she loves.
This is a troubled world we live in.

I have a mix of happiness for having a tremendous physicist as Energy Secretary and concern that his inexperience will make change difficult.
On balance though, I'm hopeful.
Also, I'm more than a little pleased to submit a politics/science article that has nothing to do with ID or creationism.

Waaaay too sappy.
But also a little charming, life-affirming even.
I'm reminded of the (real-life) guy who was giving out free hugs.

I really like this. There are some major cons, but this seems too cool not to have if I ever have the luxury to have a house built for it.
