All good ideas. If you want to take these further, go to Wal Greens and buy the $10 popcorn popper, a long wooden spoon, spray bottle, and a metal colander. Order green coffee beans off the internet. I've used CCM Coffee ccmcoffee.com [ccmcoffee.com] ) and Sweet Maria's sweetmarias.com [sweetmarias.com] ) CCM had five pounds of Columbian for $22 plus $10 shipping and I've gotten five pounds of mixed Columbian from Sweet Maria's for $30 plus $10 shipping.
There are quite a few guides to roasting coffee in a popcorn popper, google that one.
Keep in mind you are dealing with flammable material and electricity. Be careful. If you leave the popper unattended at any time you risk a fire! Even if you've just turned it off with beans in it and you are going back inside for a spray bottle.
To me the Wal Greens popper does about 100 grams of green coffee beans reliably. Once you have your popper plugged up OUTSIDE (very important due to smoke and chaff) turn it on and let it run about a minute so it can warm up, then pour your beans into the chamber. At this point I use the wooden spoon to stir the beans, a lot. At least until they have started to turn brown and lose weight enough to spin on their own. Roast to desired color then turn off the popper and dump the beans into the colander. I spray the beans with water while tossing them in in the colander until they stop smoking. Then leave them outside to cool. If it's summer or winter affects roasting time so you'll have to experiment a bit with the popper.
With practice you too can be a coffee jerk!
