Alternate histories and "what ifs" are fun, and useful, for several reasons. Its always entertaining to speculate on what if events had gone differently at Normandy, or during the Bay Of Pigs crisis. Its also useful, since we apparently aren't done having wars and world crises, yet. What ifs allow for extrapolations that just might prove to be useful, that is, if they aren't "too" far out.
