I am, among other things, a Computer Programmer. Who dabbles in spec-fiction. I have a thing for Zombies. And atomic explosions. I listen to a lot of music. And am succinct. ... Or not as the situation requires. :) Currently I'm assimilating everything SEO-related. Partly in support of webdev clients, but mainly in prep to an upcoming launch of an internally-developed web project for programmers. As time goes on my stumbles will most likely begin to encompass a wide variety of programming issues. And further along, more esoteric issues concerning Artificial Intelligence and the true underlying nature of Existence. You have been formally and properly forewarned.

Everywhere I go of late (SEO/SEM related) Andy's been there before me. Or he helped start the site. Or some such. (It's like his Avatar is haunting me.) (So I guess it's a *good thing* I like reading most everything he has to say, or that could be really, really annoying. :)

An interesting experiment -- to see if a blogger can go it alone without the Google Search Engine traffic. With Google roaring about attacking every site it sees these days (or so it feels like this last month) I imagine there's more than a few others wanting to free themselves and do the same.

Some good overall advice on building traffic and social presence. I've only recently started building up my profile pages and trying to unify all the links, so I know this definitely helps. Also have noticed the SU300 effect -- where you can get 300 hits the day you SU a page. But you apparently only get the 300+ hits when tags include some of the more generic ones. Otherwise it's some percentage less than the SU300 max.

Noticed the same about the traffic the first time I added a page of my own. And those spikes. Fortunately I had just coded a new page-level caching mechanism to handle load. I worry a bit about the spikes as they seem cumulative, but so far so good, as long as no one stumbles too much at once I guess. (Nothing like digg/slash-dot.)
As far as social sites go, I've tried them all, but SU is my favorite place for a few of the reasons you mention. It's just plain homey. The others ... (are there language filters on SU?) ... well, they're pretty awful. And boring frankly. The dynamics are just off. The only others ones I really plan on keeping track of are digg and orkut, but infrequently.
