I can't shelve the feeling that modernity is the worse of all totalitarianisms. Its ambition is to erect itself over a tabula rasa. First erase the past and then impose itself as the unique thought worth of the day.

Were modernity a story about the strengthening of the principle of life or about the betterment of the human condition its approach could eventually blind us to its totalitarian nature. But in these late-modern days one can't but observe the total failure of its project. Its negative side-effects have indeed far surpassed any positivity it might have driven forth.

In this context Pei's architecture is like a breath of fresh air blending the culture of the past with the technical prowess of modernity. In a typical Chinese fashion he searches for the middle ground rejecting the extremes for a balanced middle way.

RENZO PIANO'S original concept for the new California Academy of Sciences building in Golden Gate Park was elegantly simple: Slice out a huge, rectangular section of the park landscape, lift it 36 feet into the air and slide a new piece of architecture underneath. The floor of the park would become a green roof atop the facility -- a feature Piano dubbed "the flying carpet."

Any fool can hire an architect to draw up a plan for a house, but it takes a truly inspired fool - which is to say, an artist - to start building and see where the earth and driftwood and shards of broken pottery take him.
In 1979 Michael [Kahn] & Leda [Livant] moved themselves and their paintings from Provincetown MA to rural land in Cornville Arizona. There they began the first mixed media structure which they later called Eliphante. They continued building and sculpting on the 3 acre environment.

Learning and building an Eco-Dome is an excellent way to prepare for building a larger design such as the 3-bedroom house, because it provides a hands-on learning experience on the essential aspects of Superadobe construction. The Eco-Dome's size of approximately 400 square feet (interior space), makes it a manageable structure for the first time owner builder. The finished "very small house" is self-contained and can become a small guest house, studio apartment, or be the first step in a cluster design of an Eco-Village of vaults and domes.
