Hello from the Boyne Valley in Ireland, home to the 5000 year old megalithic monuments of Newgrange (my avatar image), Knowth and Dowth. I have a keen interest in ancient and sacred sites throughout the world and have visited sites throughout Ireland, England, Scotland, Brittany and Malta. My other interests include Photography, Labyrinths, Self-Improvement and Universal Spirituality. Delicate Arch - Arches National Park, Utah, USA

Arches National Park is a U.S. national park in eastern Utah. It is known for preserving over 2000 natural sandstone arches. The park is 119 square miles (310 km2) in size. Since 1970, forty-three arches have toppled because of erosion.
The area, administered by the National Park Service, was originally designated as a national monument on April 12, 1929. More than 833,000 people visited in 2006. More...

Comet Hale-Bopp above Stonehenge, England in 1997

Stonehenge is one of the most famous ancient monuments in the world and has long been recognised as a site of astronomical importance. Comet Hale-Bopp's spectacular appearance above the ancient and world heritage listed Stonehenge monument was documented in 1997. Intriguingly, Comet Hale-Bopp's probable previous appearance over four thousand years ago, also coincides with one of the development phases of Stonehenge.
Comet Hale-Bopp above the Great Pyramids of Giza in 1997

The Moon and stars of Taurus (with the Pleiades) and Perseus accompany the spectacular view of Comet Hale-Bopp above the Great Pyramids of Giza in 1997, probably more than four thousand years since the comet's last appearance.
The night sky as seen from inside a sacred cave near the monastery of Geghard in Armenia

Photo from inside a sacred cave near the monastery of Geghard; a world Heritage Site in Armenia. The church is being partially made like a hidden temple in a cave, carved out of the adjacent mountain, surrounded by magnificent towering cliffs. Geghard means "the Monastery of the Spear". Photographer Babak Tafreshi comments "The moments inside the cave was surreal. The setting Moon was shedding light on the deeply silent forest, while the bright star Vega was visible above the historic monastery. On the cave's right side, all along the trek to the church, people had made vows with the god by knotting a small piece of white cloth from branches of the trees."

Dowth Passage Tomb, The Boyne Valley, Ireland - World Heritage Site

Dowth the Fairy Mound of Darkness is about the same size as Newgrange and Knowth and was built in the same period over 5000 years ago. The mound was subjected to a very unprofessional excavation in 1847, two passage tombs were discovered but the mound was severely damaged in the process.

The passages tombs are much less spectacular than Newgrange or Knowth with shorter passages and lower roofs. Both are on the western site of the mound, they are referred to as Dowth North and Dowth South. The Dowth North passage is 14 metres in length; the chamber is cruciform in shape with an annex off the right hand recess, the chamber roof is corbelled and is 3 metres high.

Easter Island, the mystery of the Stone Giants

Easter Island is one of the most isolated islands in the world but 1200 years ago a double-hulled canoe filled with seafarers from a distant culture landed upon its shores. Over the centuries that followed a remarkable society developed in isolation on the island. For reasons still unknown they began carving giant statues out of volcanic rock. These monuments, known, as "moai" are some of the most incredible ancient relics ever discovered.

Prehistoric Stonehenge on the Salisbury Plain in England - World Heritage Site

Stonehenge is probably the best known and most studied megalithic structure anywhere in the world, yet its original purpose is still unclear. Even the celebrated summer solstice sunrise significance is in doubt, Stonehenge may actually have been built to mark the winter solstice sunset. The winter solstice would have been of much greater importance to the builders of Stonehenge, early farming communities who depended on the return of longer and warmer days to grow their crops.
Glastonbury Abbey - Somerset, England.

The Abbey was first started in the 7th century and gradually it was enlarged during the next 300 years. By the 14th century it was considered to be the 2nd wealthiest monastary in Britain. It sadly became victim of the Dissolution of Monastaries in 1540 and now lies in ruins. The remains of King Arthur and Lady Guinevere are still thought to rest within the Abbey grounds. More...

The tri-spiral design at the back of the chamber at Newgrange is probably the most famous Irish Megalithic symbol. The design is often called a triple spiral; however archaeologists call it the three-spiral stone.

Newgrange Megalithic Passage Tomb, Ireland - World Heritage Site

Newgrange Megalithic Passage Tomb was built about 3200 BC. The kidney shaped mound covers an area of over one acre and is surrounded by 97 kerbstones, some of which are richly decorated with megalithic art. The 19 metre long inner passage leads to a cruciform chamber with a corbelled roof. It is estimated that the construction of the Passage Tomb at Newgrange would have taken a work force of 300 at least 20 years. More...
Knowth Megalithic Passage Tomb, Ireland - World Heritage Site

Knowth was built over 5000 years ago, probably after the construction of Newgrange and before the construction of Dowth. The Great Mound at Knowth is similar in size to Newgrange and is surrounded by 18 smaller satellite mounds. The Great Mound has two passages with entrances on opposite sides, the western passage is 34 metres long and the eastern passage is 40 metre long, ending with a cruciform chamber. More...
