kewara81 is a 30 year old man from Kansas City, Missouri, USA
My name is Keith, a word of Gaelic origins, meaning a woodsman or a man of the forest. Although I disbelieve in concepts of a master plan or destiny, the meaning of my name has some truth to my behavior and interests and so for the purposes of self description will prove a self-fulfilling prophecy, of sorts.
Firstly, I have always enjoyed outdoor activities. During my childhood I had an extensive sports schedule, often going from one practice to another. I also had a plenitude of adventures with my younger brother and various neighbors; I was always in my element come sun, wind, rain, or snow. I still enjoy wondering around, usually by myself, around new areas, getting lost in thought while exploring, and the satisfaction of physical exertion.
Secondly, I have a natural skill for working with wood. During Boy Scout camping trips, I would often find a suitable piece of wood and spend hours whittling. Later into my adolescences I constructed various wood items, such as, computer desks and entertainment centers. The meticulous measuring and planning of complex furniture, and the very nature of crafting, highly appealed to me. Actualization, or the ability and means to plan, control, and create something from imagination to physical object is a very satisfying and consciousness-raising experience.
Thirdly, I have a strong benevolence for all things living. I do not hunt animals for sport or consume their flesh. I originally began my vegetarianism as a means of improving my nutrition and after a few months it became a lifestyle; which necessitates analysis and inquiry to the composition of your food. This inquiry soon expanded my understanding of the U.S. and the world farming industry policies and practices and subsequently manifested an aversion towards unethically treated animals and the products developed from them. The ethical considerations lead me to Ecocentricism.
Ecocentricism is an ethical methodology that acknowledges the value of ecosystems. Humans understand the value of life and the subsequent interdependency of many life forms and therefore have a duty to maintain these systems. Maintenance can range from engineering environments to preserving the natural state. Ecocentricism is often in opposition to Anthropocentrism (human centered ethics) which places higher intrinsic value upon humans regardless of our actions. Although I acknowledge humans as the only (known) moral agents on Earth this does not justify unethical treatment of living systems; if anything, this increases our duty to maintain the foundation of our existence, the environment.
Fourthly, nature has implicit ties to discovery. In my adult life I have continued to foster my sense of curiosity and subsequent discovery to further my ability to imagine, invent, and innovate. I have pursued understanding and knowledge in the realm of science as a means of maintaining a true progressive mindset while applying such a methodology to other areas of knowledge.
