    • Wow. A museum for a truly disgusting fast food snack. It doesn't even have the excuse of a limp salad leaf as McDonalds has..... And 800 million currywurst per year ??? Not a number we should be proud of *shudder

    • The humble currywurst gets its own museum

    • Germans eat more than 800 million currywurst a year. To celebrate the country's 60-year love affair with the sausage doused in ketchup and spices, the currywurst is getting its very own museum.

Despite a heated debate over whether the sauce was invented in Berlin or Germany's port city of Hamburg the museum has given the honor to Herta Heuwer, a Berliner living in the former British sector. Looking to provide a tasty snack on postwar rations, Heuwer produced her winning mix of tomato ketchup and 12 spices in 1949. Loewer justifies his choice with the patent certificate dated 1951 and bearing the number 721319.

The museum also offers a quick tour of the currywurst's appearances in pop culture. Ketchup bottles double as headphones through which visitors can listen to German pop icon Herbert Groenemeyer singing about the cure-all currywurst as well as German comedian and jazz musician Helge Schneider with his 2005 release of "The Chip Stand." ...more

    • Sounds good. But.

I thought we were generally protected from that stuff. Obviously not. And the worst is that if animals are fed with the gm crap, it doesn't have to be mentioned on the label either.

      Damn our spineless politicians !

    • Consumers get 'No Genetic Engineering' label for food

    • German consumers now have an easier way to determine if their food has been genetically modified after Minister of Agriculture and Consumer Protection, Ilse Aigner, introduced a new "No Genetic Engineering" logo on Monday.

"Through the adoption of a universal logo, consumers' freedom to choose will be strengthened, and I hope that the label will be used actively," Aigner said in Berlin.

A majority of Germans prefer not to buy GM food and consumer and environmental organisations have welcomed the label.

"The new seal achieves clarity in the labelling jungle," said genetic engineering expert for Greenpeace Barbara Kamradt, adding that it will also increase the value of these products. ...more

    • Shooting stars set to light up night sky

    • The best night to see the shooting stars will be Wednesday, although Tuesday and Thursday will also be worth a look skywards after dark, according to astronomy professor Hans-Ulrich Keller from Stuttgart.

He says the best time to stare at the skies is between 10pm and 4am, when there will be up to 100 shooting stars an hour.

The Perseid meteor shower, considered the richest of the year, consists of tiny pieces of the Swift-Tuttle comet left behind during its 130-year-solar orbit.

These pieces of space dust - some as large as peas but most just a few millimetres across - burn up as they hit Earth's atmosphere, creating the shooting stars.

The stars, also known as The Tears of Saint Lawrence after an early Christian martyred by the Romans whose feast day falls on August 10, can be seen from all over the world.

    • Understandable - considering the US is the country with the most imprisoned people on Earth. However, I have yet to read how much money is spent on crime prevention and with that I don't mean better security and more guns. The root lies in the number of uneducated, desperate people. This unspeakable "3-strike-law" (if I remember the name correctly) that puts petty criminals for shop-lifting and the like in prison for many years is another issue that ought to be addressed.

But then, more and more prisons are run by corporations and of course they will profit by charging prisoners.

      Disgusting.

    • A one-night stay? Ninety dollars. Need to see a doctor? Ten bucks. Want toilet paper? Pay for it yourself.

In the ever-widening search for extra income during desperate economic times, states across the nation are embracing a new idea: making inmates pay their debt to society not only in hard time, but also in cold, hard cash.

In New York, GOP Assemblyman James Tedisco introduced a bill that would charge wealthy criminals $90 a day for room and board at state prisons.

Dubbed the "Madoff Bill," after billion-dollar Ponzi schemer Bernard Madoff, the legislation is designed to ease the $1 billion annual cost of incarcerating prisoners. ...more

    • To capture the energy converted from sunlight, the `eneloop portable solar' comes with an `eneloop mobile booster' (KBC-L3A) which stores the energy to an internal lithium-ion battery via a USB power port. Once charged, the energy stored can be used to charge cell phones, portable gaming devices, as well as audio devices from its outgoing USB power ports. By keeping the `eneloop mobile booster' charged from the clean power provided by the sun, power can be provided to USB-powered portable devices on a daily basis, or in times of emergency.
After approximately one hour of generating solar power under fair-weather conditions, the twin version of the `eneloop portable solar' (SSL-SBWL3AS) can charge a USB-charge enabled cell phone enough to continuously talk for approx. 40 minutes*4, for the single panel version of the `eneloop portable solar', the same amount of generating time yields approximately 20 minutes of talk time on the cell phone, perfect for emergency or daily talking conditions. ...more

    • Polar bear Knut gets Italian girlfriend

    • The Berlin Zoo's famous polar bear Knut will be getting a girlfriend from Munich's Hellabrunn Zoo, daily Der Tagesspiegel reported on Thursday.

Three-year-old Gianna, who originally came to Germany from Italy, will likely arrive in Berlin around mid-September, head of the Hellabrunn Zoo Henning Wiesner told the paper.

Knut's new girlfriend was named after Italian rock singer Gianna Nannini. She apparently did not get along with her last intended mate, the nine-year-old Yoghi, and had to move in with Knut's grandmother Lisa.

Her stay in Berlin will only be temporary, the paper reported, adding that the Berlin Zoo has not confirmed her arrival. ...more

    • Bolivia's Ban on Circus Animals Favors Animal Welfare Over Entertainment

    • In a landmark ruling to ban all circus animals, Bolivia has taken a stand against animal cruelty, setting an example for other countries around the world.
No More Circus Animals in Bolivia
In what animal rights activists are calling a "groundbreaking" ruling, Bolivia has become the first country to ban all animals--both wild and domestic--from participating in circus acts. The law is an attempt to put a stop to the "widespread abuse in circuses operating in Bolivia," The Associated Press reports.

The new law, which took effect on July 1, states that "the use of animals in circuses `constitutes an act of cruelty,'" and gives circus operators a year in which to comply with the new regulations, Ximena Flores, sponsor of the bill, explained to the AP.

According to Flores, authorities will also try to prevent circus owners from killing the animals in order to comply with the deadline. "About 50 animals are circulating in national and international circuses at the moment [in Bolivia] and we want to negotiate to make sure that the animals aren't eliminated," she told the AP. ...more
