This was a carefully planned out picture. They actually measured out the general size of each of the pins in order to make a paper background of dots. This would mean the position of the pins would be relatively precise. They then took a reference photo (altered slightly in order to add more visual components, like the mushroom guys) and added graph lines to correspond to the pins. Almost all the pins were Staples brand in order to achieve a uniform size and colour. In order to do this, they visited Staples stores in about 3 different towns and learned when they received shipments. I helped with this one day and ended up with bruises on the tips of my fingers. Most of the guys ended up finding creative ways to push the pins in.
